      My DS mentioned that the topic is not within what they expect. They have practice many topics in school but this is not even close

      actually very hard to prepare for Oral, anything can come out under the sun

      Yesterday, kid spent so much time reading up some cut up newspaper articles on current affair, but none of the topics prepared came out today. And library, never even prepare at all ... came out unexpectedly.

      In Primary school, they usually ask questions that are closely related to their lives. Good to link current affairs but only if it applies to the qn. They like to ask about school/neighbourhood/friends/cleaning the house/teachers/things u do/healthy lifestyle. Library was a common prelim question a couple of years ago.

      His current affairs revision won't go to waste. Will be useful when he does argumentative essays in sec sch and u do require a lot of such knowledge for O levels oral.

      Help needed for these questions, please? :imdrowning:

      Both these questions are of the same pattern it seems.

      1. Mei Lan had 5 similar pieces of paper. She cut each piece into three identical rectangles. The rectangular pieces of paper were shared equally among 6 pupils. How many rectangular pieces of paper did each pupil get?

      Thinking hard how to cut 3 identical rectangles from 5 pieces of papers? After cutting, join the papers together? :?
      Can somebody enlighten me?

      Each piece is cut into three, so 15 pieces altogether.

      please help to solve this problem:

      Tom had $4 more than Sheila. Tom spent twice as much money as Sheila. In the end, Sheila had twice as much money as Tom. If they had $42 altogether at first,
      A) How much did Tom spend?
      B) How much did Sheila spend?

      Anybody solves this? Is the answer a) $18 b) $9.
      But I don't know how to show and explain if my DD is going to do this?
      Help pls.

      T [---------][4]
      S [---------]
      total = 42, so S = (42-4)/2 = 19, T = 19+4=23

      at the end,
      T [----][xxxx][xxxx]
      S [----][----][xxxx]
      we see that [xxxx] = [----][4]
      replacing all the [xxxx] boxes with [----][4]:
      T [----][----][4][----][4]

      this is equals to 23.
      so [----] is (23-8)/3 = 5
      so [xxxx]= 5+4 = 9
      Tom spent 2*9 = 18
      Sheila spent 9

      Hi,

      Will like to seek advise on what is the model to use for this question, assumption?

      Q) Miss Carol gave her pupils 114 sweets on Children's Day. Each 4-year-old child received 2 sweets and each 5-year-old child received 3 sweets. The 5-year-old children received a total of 6 more sweets than the 4-year-old children. How many pupils does Miss Carol have?

      Thanks in advance 🙂
      four year old sweets [----]
      five year old sweets [----][6]
      total = [----]+[----]+6 = 114
      [---]= 54
      since each four year old has 2 sweets there are 54/2 = 27 four year old kids.
      there are (54+6)/3 = 20 five year old kids.
      there are 47 kids altogether.

      Pl help.
      if we remove 1 NF book,
      NF ---- F
      1u ---- 6u

      before we remove 1 NF book:
      NF ---- F
      1u+1 -- 6u

      this is the original number of books.
      if we remove 2 F books:

      NF ---- F
      1u+1 --- 6u-2
      this is also 1:4 (1/5 of remaining books)
      cross multiply
      i.e.
      4*(u+1) = 6u-2
      2u = 6
      u = 3

      originally there were 6u + 1u + 1 = 7u+1 = 21+1 = 22 books

      Here's a detailed example of the cross-multiply method:

      hope it helps!
