Actually for ip schools, it's very important that the child was not very reliant on tuitions during pri school to achieve the qualifying score. The diff becomes somewhat telling when in sec school where the learning process is very diff from pri school.... that's according to my boy

I beg to differ. I observe that many who do very well for psle ie. 260 and above have tuition for every subject and continue to have tuition for at least 4 subjects after they are in ip programme and they usually do very well. It's often the ones who don't get tuition that don't do well. In fact, I can only think of 1 girl who doesn't have tuition, that is if she has been honest, who does well in my kid's class.

Hi, i am a student from NYGH and i would just like to comment on this thread. Well, indeed some of my peers do cope extremely well by being heavily reliant on tuition. However, this is not possible without their ability and hardwork. I have seen quite a number of my friends who cannot cope well with school work even though they used to be the top students in their primary school. I even had a friend who transferred out even though her results are very outstanding in the level. I guess my point is that try not to force it on your dc to get into a so-called elite school for the sake of getting in without being able to cope. Schoolwork here is pretty heavy and if one does not do well, they would have a chance to get into the o level class. Which in turn has absolutely no advantage to your dc since they are not in the IP program. Conversely, if your dc has the ability to cope, definitely NYGH is a place to further nurture their talents. This school offers a lot of chances for students who are good and is competitive to further bring them beyond what they currently have. Just contemplate through everything thoroughly before making the choices tuition isn't really the key.

Nanyang is stressful(to my dd). And the teachers are somehow biased:( I heard from my girl that there is this student, she is always disliked by teachers.

I heard, this student was once talking in class and the teacher suddenly flew into a rage n threw a whiteboard marker from the front of the class to all the way back. It wasnt only that student who was talking so i guess this is a case of prejudice:(( The marker was broken due to how hard it was thrown and i was told it flew extremely near to the student and in fact, almost hit her, luckily, she dodged.

I was as traumatised as the student when i heard this from my dd. firstly, how can a teacher throw a marker at a student. I was as traumatised as the student when i heard about it. Apparently, the student, who used to love math class in the class started to dislike it unfortunately.
I always thought that nygh was a very good school and sent my dd there hoping that the influence she got would get her to improve dramatically in her studies as well as character but in the end, the teacher is such a bad example... I really regret my decision on allowing my dd to go to nygh. That school has also caused her suffer heavy school workload.... Haizzz, im really at a lost of what to do.

First of all, if above allegation were true, a/k first hand experience, you should directly approach school ; if it is 'hearsay', take a pinch of salt; we all have our shares of \"good\" and \"bad\" experience in any schools. But certainly, if teacher mentioned above is NYGH, the management team should look into it;

Secondly, the IP schools, especially schools like NYGH, are expected \"stressful\" with \"heavy workload\" and much less \"spoon feeding\". At the first place, it was our responsibility to help our children to choose the school that suits for them, not suits our ego. If you find NYGH is indeed too stressful, again, approach to school; Madam Heng has mentioned many times, the school will help you to transfer more suitable school for your dd. Don't take it badly, but rather, the better suited school means the happier school life.

Thirdly, we, (most f us) are parents of DDs in NYGH, should help our dds to adjust and enjoy their education in NY. Let our sharing be of good suggestion, good encouragement, or of any resourceful information, as this forum has been always offered. We should refrain ourselves to just vent our negative feeling which helps no one.

Indeed, sometimes hearing may not be the most truthful perspective of view. As a student in Nanyang, I can proudly say that nearly all teachers are very caring and helpful. Whenever I feels overly stressed or have any queries, the teachers would even sacrifice their lunchtime to have a talk/tutor time with me. Some of them even provide free after school tuition for certain students if required. Probably the marker case would be that the student was being overboard by talking in class too frequently (trust me, it is very frustrating for their classmates and teachers who are trying to concentrate) and the teacher was more of being in a bad mood that day. Or even, this whole case may be exaggerated or rumored only.

HI guys I'm in NYGH Sec 1 and although it is only the start of secondary sch life, things are getting really stressful. Almost every week, there are graded quizzes,graded assignments etc. maybe we just have to accept this fact and not be so marks-conscious. Only then can we not b stressed abt graded tasks. Esp I'm in 103, which is like the bilingual class (stronger in languages) and also one of the PSLE top classes and the teachers' expectations of us are higher. As for teachers, i'm rather shocked that the tchrs in ny are actuallly biased as up till now my teachers are still relative caring and kind.As for the stressfulness, I rem what my geog teacher( who was an Ny student) told us during the first lesson: I do not see 30 students but 30 rubber bands. I am here to stretch you but not let you break.

Do you mind sharing how you come to know that 103 is a top psle score class and a class stronger in languages?

My kid does not seem to know anything. When I asked her if her class has any salient characteristic, or which class is the hmp/aep/gep/top/sports class, she says she got no idea as 'all classes are mixed'!

But it seems to me that there are groupings of students of different strengths from this thread.

Hi Rains, I am a sec two student in nanyang and for your concern, the main classes are 101 the AEP class and 109 the hmp class. And well, indeed the classes are grouped into the order as 103,112 and 113 are classes for the stronger students. For this year's Sec one batch, 112 and 113 are both gep classes and 103 is the SBGE class (sch based gifted education). However, for 103 is being grouped by the PSLE score, there are definitely more talented girls out there in other classes who can excel too. So, still, as long as sufficient efforts are being put in, whichever classes does not matter at all because in Sec two, its the streaming year where you get the choice to go to SMTP, HP, BSP, triple science or double sciences classes in sec three based on your academic results in sec two
