We tried the downtown line yesterday too.
We alighted at Tan Kah Kee station and there’s a bus stop there, take any bus from there, then alight at second bus stop, outside HCI, cross the overhead bridge. No junction, very convenient.

Perhaps you can have a try at this route, the free travel is up til 1st Jan.
From Pasir Ris to NYGH, our estimated time is 1 hr 5 mins.
I think it’s quite convenient with the downtown line.
