I saw one of my former lecturers from NUS (David Lee) now teaching in SUSS. Also talked to another professor (Accountancy) who told me that he had lectured in NTU for more than 10 years. Looks like a number of lecturers have transferred here from SMU, NTU and NUS. Since SUSS is part of MOE - don’t think it will let it fail.

Both are equally good. Consider the distance and best to travel to both schools to feel the vibes.

I have the benefit of having one of my boys in RI and the other in HCI. Both are excellent schools.


A few points to share:

1. HCI is not a ‘cheena’ school at all. The students speak mostly English and they use Chinese for their current affairs discussion - so there is a benefit of bilingualism. And it is true that HCI has a strong Humanities programme. There is hardly any China-originated student in my son’s class.

2. Most of my son’s friends in HCI have grades far beyond the cut-off point and could have qualified for RI, instead they chose HCI. I knew of a boy who chose HCI instead of RI, much of the displeasure of his dad and uncle who were alumni.

3. I feel that while both schools are competitive, RI is very competitive on an individual basis.

4. While RI produced the largest number of President scholars, HCI has its fair share of scholars including Ng Chee Meng - the former Chief of Defence Force and current Minister and other illustrious personalities. HCI is also the gateway to many of the Ivy League universities.

5. Transport is quite an issue along the Bukit Timah area- with many schools around there and constant traffic jam. But I think the new MRT station will alleviate the situation.

Overall, I think both are good schools and I would advise the kids should visit both schools and make their own decision based on consultation with their parents. The kids have to feel the vibes!

May i know what are the key differences between the different consortiums, other than Isparks which is for the GEP? Thanks!

This morning, I talked to some Year 3 (going to Year 4) boys who are on the Students' Council and they told me other than iSparks, the rest are allocated randomly. In fact, iSparks might include non-GEP students who got in through DSA.

Try to thread the button (without the ring) through both buttonholes and sew it in like we did. you may need to snip the button holes a little bit to make them a little wider - that should make the threading in and general handling of the buttons easier.

Like Song22, we put ours in, sewed them in and have washed them this way ever since. lol buttons are less shiny but still look ok.

I thought I was the only one struggling with it. LOL. Could the button be just attached to the flap of the pocket instead of the entire pocket. It is really hard to fasten the button to the entire pocket!

When we were buying uniform and books, there were sales reps selling Time Magazine subscription outside the bookshop. They told us that every Friday the year 1 student would have to read the Time Magazine in preparation for GP. The rep said that it is compulsory for Sec 2. I bought a subscription thinking that it would be beneficial for my other DS who is Year 5 of another school's IP

Meanwhile, can any parent enlighten if this is truly the case?

My DS just completed his 1st yr. It is true they read different publications every week such as Straits Times, Zaobao and Times. The school subscribes and issues to the boys to read (2 share a copy). I think the subscription fees are covered through some miscellaneous fees we pay.
