Hi simson,
Yes it is spread over 5 days and the total kms on average is around 30. They do a range of cross training from running up hills, steps and playing rugby - this is sometimes included in the training and some separate. They have camps 2 times a year. I think it’s good that the coaches are not pushing them more than their young bodies can take it so that the intensity can be increased over their swimming years.
When they make great times, they are selected to train with the very best and also the best coaches in the country through development camps and high performance
unit. I think at the end of the day it’s not about the hours put in training but how well you train and how you make use of the training sessions ie setting goals and pushing yourself in achieving your goals during training.
I’m just happy if she’s happy and still wants to do this because it’s such a huge commitment and you basically don’t have a life outside swimming! I support her as long as she wants to do it.

RE: All About Competitive Swimming
Wow. That’s great. I’ve always thought that Singapore is very academic oriented unlike NZ or other countries where sports, arts and other achievements are acknowledged through scholarships into good schools. I’m pleased that it’s happening in Singapore, an all rounded education is definitely the way forward. I’ve always thought highly of Singapore and this is another thing I can brag about to my kiwi friends!!
Would love to come back and live there if job opportunity is good for my husband. We’ll have to wait and see. By the way, All Blacks which is the NZ rugby mens team had just been crowned the world champions for winning the finals against France in the rugby world champs 2011 held here in NZ. Go the All Blacks!! -

Hi all, thanks for your reply. Yes, just coming back for 5 weeks holiday and my daughter doesnt want to miss out on any training. She has the summer champs end of January in Wellington and with swimming if you stop training for more than a week, your times will suffer. Jeff, my husband sent an email to APS sometime ago but received no reply. Maybe they don’t entertain a one off training just for a month you reckon? I might try and call them today. We don’t mind the travel. I’m surprised that Singapore swimmers train so much. My daughter is a national swimmer making national times and she trains less than 10 hours a week. Her coach wants her to increase only as she gets older so that there is a step up from where she is. Otherwise her body will get use to the training intensity thus nothing more to improve on. It’s just my thought on this. Anyway, she’s too busy with other sports like Netball, Cross country and also her music as well as her studies. One thing for sure, swimming is a very disciplined sport and as a teenager I know that she’s not somewhere out there getting into trouble. Her swimming buddies have the same aspirations and goals so she’s amongst good kids.

RE: All About Competitive Swimming
Hi everyone. I’m a newbie here. I’m a Singaporean living in New Zealand and coming to visit my parents in December with the whole family. My 14 yr old daughter does competitive swimming and is enjoying it alot. She’d like to train while we are in Singapore but only with a club as that keeps her motivated. I’m just wondering if anyone could recommend a club to us so that we can contact them and see if training with them is possible. We will be staying with my parents in jurong so central location is fine by us. We travel abit for her training sessions anyway in New Zealand. Your help is much appreciated.
