Hallelujah:PSLE results have been released. For those who aim for Integrated Progamme schools, I would like to share my opinions on how to make a decision.
Apart from schools that offers O level programme, those who aim for schools offering Integrated Programme should look at A level results of the schools instead of PSLE cut-off point. It is because the next crucial exam for IP students is A level. And cut-off point can’t reflect the whole picture of IP schools because there are many factors and “tricks” affecting a school’s cut-off point.
Since the implementation of IP in 2004, the ranking of A level results for old “top 5” JCs has changed. Now, Raffles Institution still leads with a considerable gap, followed by Hwa Chong Institution, Dunman High School, River Valley High School, National Junior College and Victoria Junior College. (Based on previous A level results of the percentage of students getting at least 6 distinctions and ranking may vary slightly in different years.)
1.\tRaffles Institution (students mostly from RI junior high and RGS IP programme plus some O level students )
2.\tHwa Chong Institution (students mostly from HCI junior high and Nanyang Girls High School IP programme plus some O level students)
3.\tDunman High School (All IP students from junior high )
4.\tRiver Valley High School (All IP students from junior high)
5.\tNational Junior College (students mostly from O level plus some IP students)
6.\tVictoria Junior College (students mostly from O level plus some IP students)
This ranking is different from each school’s PSLE cut-off point ranking. According to MOE, Integrated Programme is meant for top 10% academically strong students. The top 4 schools which consist mostly or all IP students can “hijack” academically strong students after PSLE and therefore achieve good A level results. Also top O level students will choose only the top one or two schools like RI. This is why some JCs’ A level results drop substantially compared to 6 or 7 years ago before the implementation of IP. The reason why some of these schools’ IP progremmes still have such high PSLE cut-off point might be because of small number of students intake .
Affiliation also plays a part on PSLE cut-off point by reducing the number of vacancies left for students without affiliation resulting the hike of its cut-off point. For example, students from Nanyang Primary need only 250 in PSLE to be admitted to Nangyang Girls High School (compared to 260+ from other non-affiliated schools). Based on Nangyang Primary’s performance, there should be quite a number of students who can take advantage of this privilege. This might partially explain why Nanyang Girls High School has higher PSLE cut-off point than Raffles Girls Schools.
Of course, beside A level result, when choosing a dream IP school, one may consider other factors. Or you may want to choose IB programme instead of A level. Just collect as much info as you can and go for your decision. Good luck everyone.
the thing is, although I am not in the top 10% of the cohort, I maintain a result of 2 A* and 2 As with a DISTINCTION for HMT. Still, my result is 249+3 and therefore my stars and As might be low. Do you think I stand a chance for St. Nicholas IP?
