Hello to mommies with boys currently studying in MJS, would appreciate if you could share more about the school. πŸ™‚ I'm considering to register my son in MJS for the 2014 enrollment. Hear from you soon!

Hi there tootsieroll!

Thank you for the reply. Your helpful response assured my choice of selection for the school. πŸ˜„

I like all the positive statements you've pointed, especially point \"2. Emphasis on not just academic, but being an all rounder - character and aesthetic development are also important.\" I believe it's an important attribute that a child should be instilled with.

As for the not so complimentary point you've shared, o'well I guess it's just a teething issue that could be overcome once everything is more settled down. Nonetheless, there seems to be more positive points than the negative ones, that you've pointed out, in a nut shell, it seems to be quite a promising choice school for molding lil boys to man πŸ˜‚

Oh! I bet my boy will be very happy to see a Lego room in the school. πŸ˜„ I wonder if there'll be any open house or school tour prior to the registration, in time to come. Would love to check out the school environment.

Once again, thanks for sharing! πŸ˜„
Hi Zannymom,
The school environment is nice - big and airy. Tuckshop is decent, quite a good variety of food for the boys. No soft drinks, no deep fried food (I think).

I know they had open house the last 2 years - I attended last year, and you get to walk around the school a little to get a feel of it. Should be sometime in June - July. Maybe can give the school a ring nearer the time?

In the meantime, you can look at the school website - they've got a couple of publicity videos there: http://www.montfortjunior.moe.edu.sg/

Hi Zannymom,
My son is in P1 this year and he loves it at MJS.

Pros:
1. Young, dynamic principal who is forward thinking
2. Emphasis on not just academic, but being an all rounder - character and aesthetic development are also important.
3. Good facilities - You can probably find gyms and computer rooms in all the schools, but how many boast of a Lego room?
4. Good range of CCAs, even for P1s - they are encouraged to take sport and non sport CCAs
5. Active Parent volunteer group who help out in celebrations, learning support, the Lego room etc...
6. Discipline - punctuality, no bullying, school attire etc...
7. Spiritual - It's a Catholic school, and emphasises Catholic ethos, but even if you're not one, the all round moral values it espouses is one that is positive.
8. International community - Away with the xenophobia that is gripping this country - there are a number of boys who are not Singaporeans, and it makes the cultural environment so much richer.

Cons:
1. If I had to criticize anything, I did find the communication in the first 2 weeks a little lacking, but it seems a lot better now (mostly in terms of what homework he needs to be doing)....maybe it was just opening term disorientation.
2. Honestly can't think of anything else at the moment!

I think this school is one of the best kept secrets in Singapore. No need for an elite name - the boys have a great time, and get to develop according to their potential :boogie:

I think it’s up to you, how often you want to change uniform. I think 2 sets of PE attire and at least 2 pairs of uniform/ socks

MadameMoiselle:
Tootsieroll, im residing in punggol and i went to open houses near my vicinity: Edgefield & Mee Toh. None of them beat MJS (the respectful kids, loads of Ccas, mjs has gym, cleaner environment, updated notice board, great PSG, etc) but academically MJS parked below them. Both r balloting even for >1km. 😞 i hate balloting!

Btw, did u join the PSG fb account?
I think you definitely can get in at 2c. I live in Punggol too. I thought PSG is only available to join when the boy is a pupil?

MadameMoiselle:

Hi Tootsieroll,

We are definitely registering MJS this year for our DS. He loves the school especially the lego room (of course!) and the synthetic grass field and ALL BOYS. The school is huge. Boys will be boys. They love to play. So i do not want him to be academically good but strive in CCAs as well. We are above 2km n hope that he is selected (as I know MJS do not have balloting thou. hehe!)

ive been to many school tours n open houses & MJS caught my eye with the interior & moral values explained by the principal. We are non-catholic. I just love the mixture of races in the school and having known its a mini-international school. (how cool!)

Btw, which one is you during the principal talk? I was at the back and I suppose the vainty mom with high wedge. lol!!!!
Have you registered yet? I've only been to a couple of other schools too, all nice, but Montfort is the one gave me a lasting impression. Which schools had you visited previously? We are Catholic, but my son is a foreigner, so will only qualify for Phase 3 unfortunately. Yes, I believe it is quite international, we asked the principal and she said a lot of filipinos, chinese, myanmar, mixed kids, so yes I do like the diversity, because learning styles will be very different and the school has to use different ways to teach.

I was the mum with the crying girl, who fell on the stairs - don't know if you noticed πŸ˜› Highly embarrassing moment!!

Hi Tootsieroll,

I am going for the open house too next week. Got a confirmation email and my DS is very excited especially the Lego part. lol! Shall see you next week.

I got some qns to ask like do the sch has PAL prog (not sure whether its an important prog/useful/necessary & what is \"I am a STAR prog We are a Star Class prog Magical Pen\"
Hi MadameMoiselle,
Sorry, I've only seen this entry now. What did you think about the open house?
It was interesting to see the boys in a real classroom session - we went to the talks, so only observed the English and Art. My son loves it - he didn't want to leave - the Lego room and Butterfly garden really caught his attention.

The Principal gives me the impression that she is really trying to improve the academic standards of the school. I think considering that parents generally like to try for more 'elite' schools, what MJS is left with are those really wanting a much more holistic education rather than one which is purely result driven, not to say they won't support the child who is bright (at least from her presentation).

So yes, we will be applying for our son - MJS first choice. Age quod agis - what an empowering motto!

I’m going for the open house on 7 July. Rather looking forward to it - got a confirmation email last week, and today, another email reconfirming things. I’ve no doubt my son will enjoy the open day.

Thanks for the info WD πŸ™‚

Feeling a little more reassured now, since my son will unfortunately only qualify for Phase 3 - non Singaporean, even though his mother is born and bred here :xedfingers:
