      jetsetter:

I just scrolled up to read the posts. I saw someone posted the photo of the parents' backs. I was wrong to say it might not be a calculated move. It WAS a calculated move.

Reporter armed with camera was walking behind them, how can no staff see the threesome at the Hall? That's why I assume the school already knows. If they really want to establish whom, they can always view the video recordings. But I doubt they will do so. What's the point of witchhunting? Damage is already done. They need to control the damage now. That's more impt than anything else.
Of course there is a chance that was just one random picture of parents' back to represent the parents going up the hall. Haha

From what I understood fr the newspaper report, the father sent his dd to school and instead of leaving after that, he stayed to accompany her to the hall and took the photo.

For my dd1's school, parents who drive, in the morning the parents can drive into the school to drop off their kids before driving off. There's no need to sign at the guardhouse.

I do not know the layout of RGPS, if the parent drives into the school to drop off his daughter maybe no need to sign at guardhouse since many parents will be driving in too? maybe he parked somewhere and followed his dd.
I believe in most schools, parents can drive in but once the adults get out of the car, the security guard will approach them to bring them to sign in at the General Office. Adults, with the exception of school staff, are not allowed to wander around the school compound unaccompanied. If this is allowed to happen, imagine how someone can pretend to be a parent of a child in the school and just goes in to kidnap any of the young children there. It's a scary thought.

I believe the father sneaked in and in doing this, he is violating a school rule as well. So much for showing a good example to the child. No doubt the school is going to tighten its security system after this incident.

cham liao, parents have to skip PTM, have to ask proxy to go liao. Or parents get different hairstyles and go gym to change body shape kekeke.

I think as long as their daughter does not know what her parents did or if she knows but does not leak, then unlikely the school will know. Of course the parents cannot wear those clothes to school events liao kekeke.

For scripts posted on FB, if seen by trs, the trs will recog the script. For this case, the tr can only match the 背影, back view bah evil.
From my previous experience, young children mostly won't keep their mouths shut for long, unless it is something they are really fearful about. So soon all his/her classmates will find out what the parents have done supposedly in the interest of the child, and more cases will follow suit.

Also with this way of handling things, I doubt it will be for the benefit for all parties. Despite not knowing who the parents are, the teacher most probably will get defensive and feel that it is unfair to him/her as he/she won't get to tell his/her side of the story to the parents.

I think the parents were afraid of approaching the school. I think the parents were afraid their child will be marked by the school so they went to media and MOE.

I don't remember reading their names in the newspapers. Only their backs were shown. At MOE HQ, they might or might not leave their names or they might request for their names to be kept in confidence.
While I understand this reasoning, I find it a bit strange.

They went to the press to ensure anonymity. However, once this case has been blown up, the teacher will sort of suspect who is the parent involved. Esp with those individual cases where the parents post up the teacher's marking and the student's script..tsk tsk.

But no less than the V-P of the school has admitted that the punishment was \"excessive\", a view shared by a member of the GPC for Education. So what is the relevance of photography any more?

Are we supposed to accept a situation where schools only know to mete out either no punishment or \"excessive\" punishment?

And how are we to know the motivations of the parent concerned? Perhaps the parent concerned knows of no other way to convey the message? Not every parent knows that they can approach a principal directly (can we?). Would a parent be wrong if he/she thinks that since the Principal must know of the punishment, it must have been approved by the Principal and it would be pointless to approach the Principal. Not everyone knows who is above the Principal, or knows the direct line number to the person in charge in MOE or the MP or the Minister. Rightly or wrongly, and it may well reflect something on our society, some people still think that the only way to get something looked into seriously by authority figures is to have it splashed out in the media.
Whether the punishment is excessive or not is subjective. If you refer to the many comments about this issue (whether here or other social media platforms), you will see there are divided views: some thought that it was excessive while others couldn't see what's wrong with standing for 15 minutes a day.

So if parents are afraid to approach the Principal directly, what's stopping them from calling the school and making an appointment? Parents nowadays are no longer as afraid of the school management, as opposed to the past. Especially parents who have no qualms about sneaking into the school compound to take a snapshot of the assembly program and reporting it to the media. I do not think they are as easily scared by the Principal.

So difficult to find the school phone number or MOE hotline but very easy to find the newspapers' hotline number to lodge a complaint directly to the press? I think it all depends on the parents' intention. Parents can be very resourceful once they have put their mind to something so don't underestimate them šŸ˜‰

you mean these 29/30 girls are the noisiest lot in RGPS?

clearly the teacher lacks classroom management that she cannot manage the noisy/talkative ones. this is primary 2, not some NS guys that the whole platoon has to be punished together.
You think it is easy for teachers to manage misbehaving kids nowadays? Teachers' hands are tied and parents are forever advocating counselling, talk nicely to the kids, assuming they will listen and not give any problem anymore. The opposite is usually true. Not every child responds like a meek lamb when they are talked to nicely...some obedient and sensible ones will but there will be others who will want to test water and challenge the boundaries that have been set.

Ever heard of the saying 'Spare the rod and spoil the child'?

Parents just have to face the fact that punishment is usually unpleasant. If it is pleasant and does not cause any discomfort, it will not be called a punishment in the first place.

      dimsum:

[quote=\"jetsetter\"]But at the end of the day, will it solve the problem? Will the MOE-tcrs that return 100% to their jobs be able to give 100% attention to all the students, if the admin/CCA etc commitments don't drop? WIll MOE supplement them in terms of allowance if they can conduct extra remedial classes for school students? When you take away this extra 'moonlighting' income opportunity from them, averaging $120 per hr or so, will the tcrs be happier?

:yikes: $120 per hour! I didn't know it's so high! This works out to be $2,880 per month ( 6 hours x 4 weeks x $120) which is very good extra income. Of course the teachers won't be happy if they are not allowed to \"moonlight\" anymore.

I dunno if I heard wrongly from the Ch8 news at 10pm. But the operator quote $100-120, then my DH and I were like \"wow! $600 per week X 4\" Good money sia...

I can't access xinmsn now, maybe someone can watch and update us? Cheers!

Actually this is a very wierd policy in the 1st place. I thought all public servants are not allowed to moonlight in a related industry for fear of conflict of interest. I am with a stat board now, and plenty of lucrative moonlighting opportunities in the private sector, but we are totally not allowed.

Why are teachers allowed in the 1st place? What will happen if the same student attends the teacher's tuition class?
There is another clause saying teachers are not allowed to take in students under his/her charge or something like that...

Why MOE doesn't want to let teachers focus on teaching only......?

They don't have the resource?? heard last time MOE always surplus budget right?

Cannot employ more clerks to tahan the admin work hereby rising employment rate?

      Cannot outsource CCAs to professionals?

      Cannot work something out?

Must squeeze the teachers until they find it difficult to focus on teaching..?

      Why..?
That's the way it is in Singapore...

If can squeeze, then squeeze more...until you are dry then they let you off.

Always want faster, better, cheaper...they forget that teachers are humans too, not robots or machines. Stretch them to their limit and something's gotta give...that's common sense.
