Hi all,
Just to share my experience with Hua Cheng @ Bukit Timah Plaza.
We are non-Chinese speakers/ expats. Both my boy and girl are in Nanyang - Higher Chinese. They switched between Wang and Hua Cheng. My boy moved from Australia to P1 NYPS Higher Chinese without knowing a bit about the language and we let him trying himself without tuition until P3. Then he was with Wang for 2 last terms in P4, complaining that too much vocabulary and too fast pace. After that, P5 to P6 with Hua Cheng for both Chinese Enrichment and Compo/Compre. He got A* for PSLE 2016. From 20/40 to >=30/40 in Compo.
My girl P4 this year, GEP at NYPS, is very good in Higher Chinese, no tuition until P3 and joined Hua Cheng then switched to Wang. She often get highest marks in class for compo.
Generally, to compare between Wang & Hua Cheng:
Teachers: Hua Cheng has the most dedicated and experienced teachers among all centers we have visited in SG. Wang teachers are normal just like all other center. Ms Jenny, at the Hua Cheng Reception/admin, was extremely experienced & helpful. On the 1st day, she gave my children a small test (10 mins) and 10 mins oral test. Then she analyzed the weakness and strength of each child and recommend which teacher in the center has the method and experience to better help each. She even advised which class had smaller size for us. During 2 years there, after every NYPS SA1 & SA2 results, i would show her a copy, she then passed to the head teacher their to have a look. The next day, she or the head teacher called us to point out which area we should focus more to improve and suggested books or other materials we could give the child at home. At end P5, the head teacher even spent time to highlight all the important words in P4-P5-P6 Higher Chinese handbooks (total 6 books) for my son to focus. As parents, the more you ask, the more they will help. I appreciate the efforts. My son gained confidence again for Chinese thanks to them.
Materials: Wang has one of the most complicated materials at higher level with lots of Vocabulary (especially in Compo). Hua Cheng materials are simplier and similar to other centers.
Teaching Method: Wang has a very old traditional and dry method which is better for studious children. Most pupils at Wang Bukit Timah Rd are from NYPS, so the class is going at faster pace. However, the way they give new words and explain them is good.
If your child is very good at and like Chinese, Wang would be better. In reverse, Hua Cheng would do better for the child without a passion for Chinese.
