Just let her attend the training and see if it’s her cup of tea. Math Olympiad is quite different from normal curriculum math, and not everyone likes it or has the aptitude for it.

You should just ask the school if they allow students without literature background to take literature, and what’s their requirements on it. Most of the subjects do have pre-requisites like O level grade.

I went to last year’s open house, and NJC looks quite run down and dirty, especially the school front due to MRT construction. The student guide didn’t hesitate to tell me that NJC is a mugger school, and the libraries open till quite late (I forgot what time) and teachers stay back in school during exam periods to help students. NJC has a really good science research program.

DS has been accepted into his CCA - floorball which has 2 training sessions per week - Tues & Thurs. Unfortunately, it clashed with his Jap classes on Tues.


As he is very keen to attend both training sessions, we are considering transferring his Jap class to Wed instead. However, with no transport to Newton MOELC on Wed, time seem really tight to get there on time. (release 2.40pm, class starts 3.30pm) Any advice from experienced parents whose kids is going on their own? Or any floorball parents is only attending 1 training session per week? What's the impact?

When I took third language, many students always came later than the time lesson began, so my teacher started lessons 10 or 15 minutes later, with the first 10-15 minutes being consultation or finishing of homework. There are still some students who will reach like 30minutes into the lesson and my teacher was quite understanding about it, knowing we had to travel from school. But I suppose what is of concern here is not about getting into trouble or not, but rather missing lessons. Week A shouldn't be a problem since dismissal is earlier, week B would be a little tight, but being late once every 2 weeks is better than being late every week, if there are really no alternatives.

What a timely question, I am also wondering. Are CCA and CIP hours very important? Do the clubs and societies in cedar allow students gain good enough points?

CIP hours are quite important, in the sense that it gives you free 5 points if you complete 100 hours. And really, 100 hours over a period of 4 years is not difficult at all. The other free points come from 4 points for enrichment. And another free 4 points from CCA attendance, as well as 1 point every 2 years (I can't remember if it's 1 point every 2 years or 1 point every year, anyway I'll be using 1 point every 2 years here) for 'participating' in cross country and sports day. It's in inverted commas because you don't necessarily have to participate in any sports day event, you just have to go for cross country and sports day. So that's already 15 'free' points. An A2 is enough for 2 bouns points, so that means you only need to work for 5 more points.

NYAA can be another source of points too. Many school activities can be used for NYAA, so it's not like it's another extra activity that has to be carried out, consuming more time. Bronze will give 2 points and silver will give 3 points. If you are in sec 3 or below now and in desparate need of CCA points, or foresee that you have a desparate need of CCA points, just go for the silver. That will give 18 points, without even doing anything much.

For clubs and societies, it will depend on which club exactly. If you're talking about MCS and ICS and ELDDS, that one has SYF, which will bring your 18 points to A2 if not A1. If you are in Photography, or infocomm, just participate in 1 or 2 competitions. Participation in competitions will give 2 points each competition I think. That will be enough to get at least an A2. With leadership position, A1 is not a problem. After I left Cedar, I realised the teachers in Cedar were quite stingy with giving CCA points. When I looked at my friends from other school's CCA record, I saw that I didn't get what they got. I had bronze in math olympiad and chemistry olympiad before, but I didn't get any points for that, while my friends got 2 points I think. I'm not sure if the teacher in charge of CCA is still the same now, but just a word of caution, if you feel you strongly deserve the points, ask for it, with evidence of course.

Yes, MSP does give 2 bonus points, if you pass it. But still, shouldn't slack in CCA because when you want to appeal in JC, they usually would want to look at your CCA records.
