After yr 6, what is the certificate that the students are getting? How well is this certificate going to be recognise?

      NUS High School Diploma

It is quite well recognized. All the major universities in UK/US recognise it. We have graduates already in havard, MIT, oxford, UCL, etc. All the local universities also recognize it. I think you can contact the school for a complete list of the universities that recognize our diploma.

      What is the textbook standard?

      What age?
And what are the topics they learn.
The textbooks are highschool/college level textbooks from the US. Very well written and easy to understand.
Topics learned vary a lot. here's a rough guide for you.

Thanks dagong99. Will seriously consider. Do you know if we try HCL in the 1st year, if 2nd year want to change to normal chinese, it will be alright ?

Oh, I'm not too sure about this as DS1 & I are quite determined to 'finish off' MT at Year 4 so that DS1 can concentrate on his triple Science as core subjects. DS1 doesn't want MT to affect his Year 5 & 6 results. He's rather weak in languages, now relying on his Math & Science subjects to 'pull up' his CAP. πŸ˜‰

      Hi
You're able to drop HMT with HOD's consent as far as i know.
The other way is to do so badly they kick you out of it πŸ˜›

Re 3rd language, what is the difference between taking it in NUSH and MOELC (besides the cost involved)? What is the benefit of taking a 3rd lang as a NUSH student? Will the 3rd lang count towards its CAP, etc.?

As well, do the pupils go in the NUSH uniform on 20 Dec?
      Hi!

It certainly is more convinient taking 3rd Language in school, no need to travel to Bishan/Ghim Moh. You can also use it to pull up your CAP, although it rarely ever helps people to pull it up. It will however affect your GPA, which is your semester grade. However, whether your child/ward takes 3rd language in school or elsewhere, he'll certainly need to put in the time and effort into it which might affect his other grades?

I believe no. They should inform you anyway.

Just to add on to some of the answers

      Sun_2010:
      Happy Mummmmm:

      Dear Mothers,

I am using my mother's account right now because I have a few questions to ask you before I submit my answer for school admission via DSA. :?:

      1) What are the school hours in NUSH?

School starts at 7:45am. The day end depends upon CCA, no of CCAs, third language, elective taken, MO .... If you are into all, then it could be a full day 4 days a week at least - ending between 4-6:30. .

      2) During science lessons, are there normally more theory or practical lessons?
A lot of practical work is done

      3) What are the chances of getting into a CCA of your choice?
Depends on what CCA . But it is easier than other top schools I think, as cohort size is much smaller.

      4) Are the science lessons generally more interesting than those in IP schools? Are there more hands-on experiments?

Dunno on a comparative basis. But at nush the 3 sciences are done thought out the year unlike what I believe is done in others schools.

      5) On average how many overseas trips have your child(ren) participated each year?

Most of the trips would come in year 4-6. There would be at least one exchange trip for everyone. There are little to no opporunities for you to go overseas in the earlier years but it is well worth the wait

      6) Do you know how many students graduate to become specialised doctors?
NUSH started in 2004. The first Batch students who graduated and went into med schools are probably still there doing their graduation. I don't think antone would be specializing yet. So far i think about 5-10% of the cohorts that graduated decided to go into medicine

      7) Are there air-conditioning units in the classrooms?

Some classrooms have, but as far as I know there are none for the year 1 classes.

      Thank you!

As a student volunteer at the past 2 DSA camps, one thing I’ve observed is that those who make it in are those that generally know how to speak the right thing at the right time and are not afraid to make errors. As many other parents before me have mentioned, there is really no use studying for such a camp.

It’s best to advice your child to be relaxed and confident throughout the camp, as those are probably the traits that NUSH are looking for in their potential students.

      all the best!

some more question for today. πŸ˜„

what kinda of literature text do they use for yr 1 ~ 4?

The Humans system of NUSH has changed a lot since my year one days. Now its considered as part of the English curriculum for the year 1 and 2s, then it'll be a subject on its own during year 3 & 4. I'm not too sure about the text though, it should vary year by year

heard the SST students require the laptop in their daily school affair. Is owning a laptop unavoidable in Nus High too?

      Any idea?
      Full.cream

A laptop is not really a must have, but more of a good to have for things like the occasional presentation, report, or rushing last minute homework, as well as gaming in school πŸ˜›

Please do note that the last thing is illegal in school and it may get your laptop confiscated.

Oh my god so many questions ><

please do forgive me if i don't really answer your questions. you could always contact me via Email. x)

nymom- I'm not too sure about the statistics, as they are rather irrelevant to me as i'm planning to move on to NUS. However I believe you could always refer to the school website, or other web resources. I think around 50% or more of the past 2 batches have pursued their university education overseas. As for the dismissal times it gets later as you progress up the years, but this year a typical year 1 would get end lessons around 12 or 1 providing he/she doesn't take extra electives/enrichments etc. However do not that timetabling is rather flexible, and CCA days (monday and friday) normally end around 5 or 6 depending on your child's CCA. I do believe that we are rather slack compared to RI, in terms of the homework given, but in terms of Curriculum its no way slacker than RI's, in fact it may just be more rigorous, especially at the higher levels.

sun_2010- As long as your child is willing to put in effort, he would be rewarded. I think thats the mentality of our school. Even if he may be a little weak in a certain subject, but as long as he works hard he will be rewarded. I don't think many are stifled here, unless you're those sort of screwed-up people (sorry for the bad language :P) then perhaps you'll be ostracized. BUT hey that happens in every school doesn't it?
I believe our school has a slight advantage over others in terms of scholarships, as our cohort size is lower, thus the competition is lower, and more of us get the chance to shine
I believe you do not really know about how the curriculum works, but you could look above in the earlier posts. There are some who go to NUSH but in the end go on to do a non science subject in uni. They are in no way misfits, and are probably no different from an average NUSH student. we're not as nerdy as you think! x)
Our school offers french and Japanese and chinese/malay for third language. I'm not too sure if you still have to pay for it though.

If you don't mind, you can always contact me via email cause I may not come here so often now, as exams are coming!

      regards
