That's a truly a pertinent point as far as the expectation of future batch of NUSH STEM graduates. With Computing and even astrophysics in the curriculum, I think more student will go into STEM-related areas and a very small minority go to non-stem related. :goodpost:

LJ’s stellar performance at TC help to consolidate NUSH OxBridge outstanding STEM reputation/ profile. Equally, if you look at the list of SG International Olympiads (from 2017 onward ) Gold medalist in the triple Science, many are invariably from NUSH. Their high standings at Olympiads and many international Research Competitions really put top NUSH students in gaining entry to OxBridge/Imperial/UCL in UK and in the US respective Ivy League/MIT/Cal Tech/Stanford/John Hopkins /Princeton/ Yale/ Berkeley etc respectively.

Finding like-minded young people passionate in math and science in the faraway land of the republic of Sakha with the world’s coldest winters must have been a surreal experience. Yet, that was exactly what a team of 13 NUS High students experienced when they took part in the inaugural Yakutia International Science Games (YISG) 2018. One of its kind, the competition had both research and Olympiad elements. The NUS High team proudly claimed the champion trophy, bringing glory to Singapore.

My understanding is there are currently four different system in Singapore (excluding international school):


1. Standard \"O\" and \"A\" level
2. IP (Integrated Program) - No need to take \"O\" level, the student will move on to JC of the school (or the affiliate program school)
3. IB - No \"O\" and \"A\" level exam, complete 6 years with an IB diploma (I think that is what it is call)
4. NUS High - No \"O\" and \"A\" level exam, complete with a NUS High Diploma.

My understanding is that NUS High also is the only full modular program (a bit like Uni with some restriction) which sound very attractive and interesting. Was at the Open House and was told that the Year 1 and Year 2 results are not taken into consideration in the NUS High Diploma cert... so technically you can flunk all subjects and still move on. But it will affect what module the student could take in Year 3 (some are like pre-requisite)

Year1/ Year2 curriculum (Foundation) is a pretty much a crash course of \"O\" level Science on top of Computing /Maths and other humanities subject.

So it's a demanding workload. Any student who technically flunked all subjects or unable to achieve minimum passing CAP will NOT move on to next higher level. He/She is likely to be retained for that year. This also applies to all level. Any student who is unable to cope with the NUSH curriculum or find the curriculum too rigid or research-oriented may ask for transfer back anytime to normal stream( up to y4). It had happened (albeit very very small minority) in the past cohorts.

IMHO, It's unlikely that such stringent NUSH selection program (especially the last two years with compulsory computing) will ever \"mis-select\" the wrong student for such a program.

On the contrary, there are also a few exceptional cases in the past cohort where students are so far advanced/accelerated of their cohort that by Year4 they have move on to the university level.

In the past, the 2nd round DSA camp emphasize group and team work - Someone just mentioned that it is now a more based on individual effort and merit.


Computing Studies is now compulsory and starts from year 1 onward. I also think Computing/ logical thinking cum problem solving ability apart from usual Maths and Science are major key elements in DSA testing and selection criteria. It is unlikely that those who are weak in these areas can even survived the accelerated NUSH Math/Science curriculum on top of the additional Computing/programming workload.

Those getting into NUSH are truly the high ability students (apart from GEPers) who can survive this extra workload.
Past Cohort graduates may pursue non-science career NUSH eg. business, law , music and humanities. I think NUSH is is more STEM-oriented than before. It make sense after all it is a Maths n Science with Computing being the fourth Science majors after triple science. Most Maths/Science Olympiad representatives are expected from this school.

Wow, what a significant change in profile of NUSH students intake over the years.


My GEP DC graduated in 2016 cohort. During my DC time, the intake was only 129 (out of 170). There were only 29 girls ( which 7 from GEP ) and only 10 other boys are from the GEP stream out of the remaining 100.

I guess time has change as computing is now a critical component of the NUSH school curriculum. In terms of DSA assessment and testing requirements, GEPers are likely to have an edge. Also I believe STEM component as far as Maths and Science school has far greater emphasis than humanities. More future graduates are likely to pursue STEM than other non-science areas.

For information, the cohort size varies in the years prior to 100% intake (170) since last year.

The last year graduating cohort (2016) has only 149 graduants with the cohort (Y1 intake) in 2011 at only 129 students.

No, NUSH from day 1 started with triple Science + Foundation Maths + (now Computing studies) on top of regular English, Chinese +Humanities subject. There's is no streaming ..it's foundation year for all subject in Y1/Y2 and advanced in y3/y4. It is a well-known fact that Y1/Y2 covered \"O\" level standard while y3/y4 curriculum would covered A Level \"H2\" standard. The specialisation year triple Honours Science+ Calculus Mathematics are well-above the JC level \"H2\". For most Physics, Chemistry and Bio with \"H3\" level accreditation.

Y5 (JC-level) is the year where specialization in majors or honours class in Triple science+ Maths (major) or Honours. Some student prefer to have one major in Arts (econ, Hist, Geo) or Music. Top % of student are allowed to have major in 4 Honours including Maths plus triple Scince or Computing studies. Y5 student must also start their Advanced Research Project (ARP) which is on one of the graduating requirement by Y6 convocation.

Refer to website for details on the curriculum on the foundation, Advanced and Specialisation year. Some high performing students are even encouraged to take acceleration in Maths, Chemistry or Physics at junor level. At Y5/Y6 some NUSH student are taking NUS modules in maths, physics, chemistry.

Hope that help to answer your queries. Even for the average student, NUSH Science + Maths curriculum far exceed the normal high school standard.
