Any recommendation for child who is weak in compo and compre?

      Hi Honesty,

I was in the same situation 3 weeks ago (check my thread under my userid). I realised my child was fearful of comp & hated Chinese. I had to basically 'drag' him to his previous tuition centre.

Feeling desperate, I decided to seek help from Thetrees123 since I got nothing to lose. My son is now motivated & interested in Chinese.

I'm not sure if he can do well for SA1 since we seek help just weeks before the exam but I'm sure if he continues to be motivated & interested, he should be able to do well for SA2.

Think forcing the kid to study is short term solution. Being motivated & interested should be the way to good.

I wish you luck & success in doing so. šŸ˜‚

Thanks westie123! The current China-chinese private tutor (with many years of experience) kept telling me I bought too difficult assessment books which my DD does not know alot of the words in there. She has been teaching my DD since last December.

There was once I told her to help my DD with school compo writing. After the lesson she said my DD did all the work herself and she merely correct some of the words in the sentences. Few days later, I received back the
compo from school with comments stated: Lack of content! :stupid:

I told myself that I will see how my DD's SA1 result and then determine if I should still keep her....
Hi Honesty,

Dun mention. We r on the same journey šŸ˜„

    • RE: Xuelin Learning Hub - Discussion

I think the standard is getting worse. Jus went thru oral practice with my child. He can't read the words he learnt prior to joining Xue Lin. Also tried contacting lady boss twice who is now stationed at Katong. She did not even bother to reply even though I left my name & contact no. Now centre run by a young golden hair administrator who seems blur about everything.

My child also has a new teacher. She's too young & inexperienced. Now she's the student while the kids are her teacher. Kids are having fun. Shouting & talking to one another. After some discussion with my spouse, have decide to transfer my child after this term.

Lady boss: if u are reading the site, please review your teaching materials and system. There are many poor parents like me who are spending our hard earn money to pay your high charges yet did not get good returns. Worse we are wasting our time. :stupid:

      is this thread still alive?

i am also interested in table tennis lessons in TP / Bishan area.
Saw some interests here. Jus to share tis is an expensive sport with high commitment. If u intend to let your child play competitively, be prepared for the tough journey. Training study training at least 4 times a week.

If your child is 7 & below, u can sign up with STTA. Above 7, STTA may not accept since most start at age of 5. In addition, u need to engage a private coach to help yr kid catch up with the rest. Every year, need to purchase at least 2 bats est. $150 above. Rubbers need to change every 6 months est. $80. Pte training $50 per hour.

STTA coaches are not allowed to accept pte students but most in fact all are moonlighting. U can go to their training centres (check STTA website on timings). Approach the China coaches after the session (Bishan or other venues). High chance they will say 'Yes' cos $$$.

Think twice & hard. My child is into TT but every now & then I wish he could take up other sports.

    • RE: Xuelin Learning Hub - Discussion

Guess I'm not the only one. Normally I try to reserve my judgement but after trying the centre for a year, think it's time to search for another centre.

The standard is really dropping & my child has difficulty catching up with his peers. My child shared it's wasting his time there & the materials are not really helpful. Pace is slow & centre is lacking of manpower. If teacher is giving oral test outside the classroom, it's 'fun time' for the students. Materials from colour also become black & White.

Did not see lady boss for quite some time. Think she's not aware that the centre is going down soon. :?:

      pek.taxi:
DS Chinese compositions have always been average but never above average in school. Recent school results seem to have worsen. However, he always has above average score in Xuelin since last year. There seems to be quite a gap in expectation between school and the centre. This is a strategy to motivate a student? Also, this year, we notice quite a difference in standards among the students in a class as there is no differentiation between higher Chinese and normal Chinese. Looks like time to make a decision... ...

Very structured. Progress depends on how easily the child takes to water. Some kids progress very fast, others take a long time. DS1 was with them previously. I couldn't take the parking crazy (at farrer park) and switched to private coaching.

      My daughter withdrew
after being coached by one of the PRC coaches. She started with local coaches but changed once she reached advance stage - two more stages to go before graduation. Her PRC coach was totally irresponsible - a young guy named Lee. He simply asked the students to swim here there w/o correcting their strokes. Made jokes & walked around. My daughter & another student (friend of mine) now continuing with private trainer. Think APS should seriously look at engaging PRC coaches. :imdrowning:
Just called up Nan Hua, 17 people outside of 2km balloting for 13 seats.

In that case, there should be 15 slips x 2 (assuming all S'poreans) for the 13 seats taking into consideration there are 2 pairs of twins this year. For every set of twins selected, 2 seats will be taken and vice versa. Actually for last year, Nan Hua waived the balloting and absorbed the extra few seats. They decided not to do so this year. Hope they change their minds šŸ™

The 2 pairs of twins are outside 2km?
I know at least one of the sets. Not sure if it's both šŸ˜‰
