    • RE: LCentral Discussion

      Hi mummies

Just wanna share my experience with LCentral.

My boy attended its Launchpad & then LiftOff at K2 2yrs ago. Now at p2, his spelling is a breeze and his reading is excellent, according to his school teacher.

I had put him at I Can Read and Lcentral concurrently and I chosen the latter after 1 term, reason being:
      1) He cried at ICR as teacher too stern and fierce to him, he said.
      2) He advanced to K2 level (LiftOff) earlier than in ICR (they name their level differently)
      3) I am impressed with the material at LC
      4) Most importantly, the support from the manager and teacher is the key factor to my boy successfully completed the course.

My opinion is both centresโ€™ materials are good. The one extra benefit I noticed from my boy advancement in p1 and p2 is that he also pick up comprehension skills from LiftOff at LC. Hence I never need to coach him in this area.

Important point to note is the teacher chemistry with your kids. Even within LC, I had changed from 1 branch to another due to a very rude teacher at Tampines branch and the very tense feelings at this centre. Bedok branch give us a warm feeling. I refused to give up LC even though my boy is still at ICR at that point as I am really impressed with the structured way and the usage of comprehension to teach phonics at LC.

I am one who is able to understand basic/ elementary and even intermediate phonics and their rules and had seen and had materials from ICR, LC and Kentridge as my kid was enrolled to these 3 school before. So I had my preference on phonics teaching.

To benefit fully from this LiftOff, i believe parents need to do just some simple revision with the kids to understand what the kids cannot apprehend in each lesson, and quickly seek teachersโ€™ clarifications.

      Hope this helps.

    • RE: 4yr old doesnt like Childcare, not performing in school

Ds was in an expensive Montessori for a yr, even with 1:10 ratio, not much learnt. After switching to preschool, he learnt much, though 1:25 ratio. The teachers and the environment count.

My N2 ds learnt nothing much at his CC after 1 yr, let him watch Leapfrog Letter factory and Talking Words, he recognizes 90% of the letters and sounds in 2 months. I had done a check before and after he started this DVDs, and was amazed. Thanks to Tamarind village's Blog for the recommendations.

      Hi mypiggee

My kindergarten ds completed LiffOff, the reading programme, last year at LC Bedok.
It was a success and really effective.
The center manager is flexible and supportive in helping the kids.
While I was there and chatted with some mummies, all give thumbs up to the teacher and this course.
Do take note there are some homework and if we diligently revise and finish this homework with our kids, I believe kids will be able to grasp reading skills in no time.

Does your kid already know basic reading or phonics letter sounds / 3 letters blending?

Think I might hv a wrong idea that some rather branded schools still hv good chances under 2C Supp compared to neighborhood schools?

Usually branded schools will have no more vacancies after 2C. But you can research and monitor your preferred choice of schools outside of Sengkang. ๐Ÿ†’

Just to inform that Compassvale Pri usually has balloting at phase 2C for within 1km. For last year, they increased an additional class. So there was no balloting in 2C for those staying within 1KM. Those staying outside of 1KM were unsuccessful. One reason is Sengkang Pri n Anchor Green Pri dun offer Tamil/Hindi classes.

A friend was unsuccessful for 2C balloting in last year's registration for Rivervale Pri. She secured a place in North Spring Pri in phase 2C Supp.

Can see past history for SK schools here ๐Ÿ™‚

      Thanks coralie.

Noticed from past results that North Spring was not popular. Hence like to know is there any particular reasons? As I knew that this school will be 1 of my only hope when all failed (after phase 2C Supp). If so unlucky that its also taken up, we hv no choice but to go to new school.

As for Compassvale n North Vista, also curious why are they hot?

      -North Vista
      -North Spring
      -Palm View

Anyone has any idea which branded schools (accessible to Sengkang) can we try under phase 2C Supp for >2km, with good chances of getting in?

Reason for asking being should I failed to secure a place at Rivervale Pri under Phase 2C (<1km), would like to try for these other branded alternatives a little far away as the other choices are those not-so-sought-after schools which I can just hop in if phase 2C Supp failed.

      Agree.

Go for LC for academic purpose.

Need urgent feedback on Teacher Laura or Teacher Susan too.
I had signed up for teacher Laura class as she seems young and vocal which should be well liked by young kids, but I have not met Teacher Susan.
Is she better in handling and communicating with K1-2 kids?

Both teachers are from UK, LC staff told me.

      TIA

Tuition to be means repeating what the school teaches. Enrichment likely introduce new things, more fun not that structured.

      Thanks would take a look![/quote]Hi

It is enrichment rather than tuition, according to the staff.
LaunchPad teaches pre-reading skills such as phonemic awareness, phonics, vocab and even handwriting.
For phonics, they will teach the basic sounds and blendings, and some sight words with picture discussions.

These are what I gathered after speaking to a teacher and a staff at LC Tampines.

      Hi

Any mummies, kindly pm me your details for LC referral.

Any comments for LC at Tampines.

K2 kids should be placed at which class to be considered on par at this age?

      TIA
