    • RE: Secondary School Selection 2013

My best friend’s daughter scored 229 and they stay in Punggol. Would appreciate if you can advise the following choices:-

      1. Xinmin or Paya Lebar Methodist (234)
      2. CHIJ St Joseph (229)
      3. Kuo Chuan Presbyterian (227)
      4. St Hilda’s (230)
      5. Hai Sing Catholic (226)
      6. Holy Innocents High (223)

Can those who know these schools please share the culture of school and behaviours of students E.g. Discipline, rowdiness etc as these are key concerns of the mother. Also the distance to schools. Thank you very much.

Thank you once again Autolycus! It is definitely helpful.

Guess I need to have confidence in both the school and my son 🙂

Thank you Autolycus for your advice. I have picked up lots of tips reading this forum and your insights and advices have been esp. useful. You must be a very experienced educator. Is there any reason why you have advised physical and chem combi and not biology? And history instead of geography?

I understand from a parent that his son’s teacher explained to some top students in the class who are not selected for IP that IP is more suitable for students who can apply what they have learnt rather than learn by memorising. Don’t humanities which IB focuses on require more memorising than technical subjects like science and math? I have the same concern as acsiparent. Not sure if my son can cope. I do not see him studying for exams till the last few days before.

Hello I hope to get some advice regarding the sec 3 subject combi.

My son will be moving from the O level track to the IP track next year. Since sec 1, he has not been very consistent with his scores - for subjects like life and physical sciences as well as literature, he could be getting 60+ in one exam and 70/80+in another. For Math, English, History and Geography, it would be 70+ in one exam and 90+ in another. Even his Art can be 50+ in one and 80+ in another. He has topped his class in life science, History, Geography, English, Literature, Math at different exams but never in one exam. His only consistent subject is Chinese at 50+. For such a child what would be a good subject combi in sec 3? I find it difficult to gauge his strength and interest given his yo-yo results. Would appreciate some advice from experienced parents here.
