verykiasu2010:those who train like mad just to be able to \"make it\" into GEP is likely to suffer and won't enjoy their studies
And deprive those children who will truely benefit from the program.

Zann:Yes - maths alone is insufficient - my comment about getting Maths Olympiad books is tongue-in-cheekThe GEP selection round include English, Maths and General Ability. Maths alone is not sufficient. NHPS last year only 11 selected for GEP. The Maths teacher did not teach them Maths Olympiad either. They get vendor to conduct Maths Olympiad from P3 to P6 to anyone who is interested. Many top scorers who are hardworking type in the P3 HA class did not get selected, though, and are now in their twining class. They attend Social Studies, HCL and others except Maths/eng/Science with the GEP pupils. They only take HCL exam with GEP pupils till P6 end SA1 before they start preparing for PSLE.wwcookie:
I heard Taonan do 'train' their students for the GEP test. This I heard from a parent who transferred her son there. I heard Nan Hua also 'train' their 2 top classes through Maths Olympiad questions. So... just buy the Maths Olympiad books from Popular if you wanna 'train' your child too
fanren:my son (Taonan) also said they din have special training for GEP test....
Hmm.. even if the school did, I would think it is highly unlikely that the students will be told they are being 'trained' for the GEP test..I'm not sure - I heard from a parent who transferred her son there in P3 - said the principal told her they will prepare the kids for the test. Maybe thru the type of questions the students are exposed to in class?wwcookie:
May I ask what type of training are provided by Tao Nan? My child who is in Tao Nan did not have any training for GEP testing. :?

ngbrdad:ngbrdad - Can i ask what are the similarities and differences between the twinning and GEP classes? Can you share your reasons for preferring the twinning class for your DS2?
Actually I am hoping for my DS2 to make it for twinning and not GEP.
ngbrdad:This year the top 2 classes together have 52 students going to the second round. Plus a handful from the other classes, maybe around 60 made it to second round. NgBrdad - does it mean that all the kids who made it to second round will definitely go to twinning classes or the better math ability classes? From past experience, during my DS1 time 2 years ago. Nan Hua had around 80 who made it to second round. Out of these around 15 made it to GEP, then the school put the next best 30+ students according to their scores in the whole GEP screening process into twinning classes.
Those who did not make the twinning classes were group into the next class, supposed with better math ability than the rest.
This yeasr DS2's class already has 28 who made it to second round so I guest it will be about the same number as well.
fanren:he is in one of the 2 best class. The real test is in round 2 bah.
I heard Taonan do 'train' their students for the GEP test. This I heard from a parent who transferred her son there. :congrats: Is your son in the top class of the school ?
5 from 3D (not a top class). Most other schools with morning classes shd receive today.
sweetheart:I heard 2 different stories though - 1) the VP of Tao Nan taking over 2) the VP of Nanyang taking over :?Oh, is the current VP Mrs Juliana Ng going to be the P of nanhua? If so, the pupils there are so bless, she is such a GREAT person n will definitely make a good P !!!
Juliana n I were colleagues last time - I was an ex teacher from Nan Hua who has resigned to do my own pte tuition after the birth of my boy.
Juliana will definitely makes a SUperB principal so all parents with kids at Nanhua, u can rest assured that yr kids are in good hands
