If e student scored A1 in the 3rd lang, then it’ll be included in the MSG calculation, otherwise, it’ll not be inclusive in the MSG. So at least it’s not so stressful for the boys. But prior to the 3rd lang EOY exam, e boys hv to opt whether to include the 3rd lang results in the overall msg.
Hi Pinky88,
Refer to your comments above on the 3rd lang MSG. You mentioned that only if the student scored A1 in the 3rd lang, then it will be included (that I understand the computation will hence be total score divided by 7 subject?). Then what is this option to include 3rd lang in the MSG? Are you saying that if prior to the EOY exam, if one is to indicate to include 3rd lang but if results end up to be worse off then A1, then it will not be included. And conversely, if it is not to be included but ended up with an A1, it will automatically be included. I am confused.
Thanks again

RE: Hwa Chong Institution (High School)
Hi Pinky88
So is the 3rd lang result to be automatically added into the MSG for every term? As for the exemption from EOY exam, does that also mean exemption from test in T4? Or there is only exam in T4? Is this exemption still on a case by case basis even though a pupil may score A1 for a subject from T1 to T3? I am just thinking that for those who have a perfect MSG of 1 throughout need not take the ECY exam at all. I believe there will be such pupil. Btw what is CF?
Sorry to keep asking you so many questions. Hope you don’t mind.
Thanks -

The 3rd lang test results will be reflected on the progress report but I'm not sure if it'll be in this 'mark checking' report since this is the 1st time they implement this. Previously, parents & students only get to view the final progress report. This 'mark checking' report is a good move:)
Hi Pinky88,
What about the results for the 3rd lang tests? Any idea whether they will be incorporated in the reports?yamatomato:

Dear Students,
Please be informed that you may now view your Term Tests / Final Year Exams marks on i-ComP Portal (see attached image).
The deadline for Teachers to key in all the marks is 8th Mar 2012, so please look for your Subject Teachers if there is anything amiss in your entered marks on or after 9th Mar 2012 for clarification as soon as possible before these marks are finalized and generated for reports.
Cheers,
Mr Chia
I don't see them in my DS's portal.
Thanks.
So you mean we will be receiving a physical progress report for this Term 1? Btw, the marks for this Term 1 will carry weightage for the year end report? If so, is the weigtage 30% and this 30% also include all other Terms' tests? Also, will they calculate the MSG at this juncture?
Many thanks! -

The boys are supposed to choose 2 subjects for ACE in Term 2. My DS is thinking of Maths and IH. Any idea what to expect from these 2 subjects. What about Science also. Appreciate any advice. Many Thanks

Talking about project. My DS has a team mate who self-appointed himself as Leader which I think the rest of the teammates actually don't mind. But the problem is this so-called Leader is beginning to be 'bossy'. He simply SMS or FB the rest to ask them to do their work and give them tight deadlines. Don't think he himself has done anything so far. I am quite shock to see this in a 13 year old. Thought this only happens in workplace!Lion_king:
Hi Parents, I wonder did your DS ever have any irresponsible teammates who were either sick or slack in doing project work like Ace project!!! My DS did almost all the slides by himself even during test period while his friends did nothing in contribution. Worst of all they did not even know the importance of the Project that carries substantial weightage in their overall msg. I wonder how can such students be suitable in IP programme. Furthermore in this consortium! They will make all sorts of lame excuse for not turning up for the discussions or meeting. How sad :stompfeet:
It is very common that some ppl slack in project works. Do not worry bcoz very soon the true colour of those who slack will be known by their classmates. So those hardworking ones will team up when there are new projects and score while those slack ones will have to form their own groups and suffer in grades.
Another thing is they are very new to project works and therefore do not know how to delicate the works properly. They usually have to meet up many times and spend long hours and very low productivity. Sometimes it is faster for one person to complete all by himself than to divide the works amongst the team. They will get much better in projects, in term of productivity, delication of works, quality and speed when they come to sec 2 and sec 3. The school is preparing them for Uni and real life. In real life you need to learn to deal with all kind of ppl and get your works done at the same time. -

Dear Yamatomatoyamatomato:
My DS will be having the Infocom test this coming Fri. He has not done well during the mock test. He told me that that he finds Infocomm not easy. Can anyone advise how to prepare for test for this subject. There is no textbook. Anything that they can read up online?
Thanks
The Infocomm notes are posted at New iVLE.. your DS could check out from there. In fact, some other subjects' notes are there too, like Science, IH, Math..
I think my DS is super blur! -

I find the CCA options a \"Wayang\" process -- for show only. Many CCAs require prior experience. What if there are no such CCAs offered in the primary school, where to get prior experience even if the student is very interested in it ? The CCA leaders conducted the trial interviews and did the selection. I heard in one sport even without the coach's presence. Can they truly identify talents/potentials in less than 5 mins at their age ? I simply cannot understand how the school can use this system to commit one to a CCA for four years on this basis....sigh. What's the point of putting in option when all has been set and sealed ?
I can't agree more. I find the whole CCA allocation process very cut-throat. Just wonder why they could not let the kids have a sports CCA that is purely recreational. While it is mentioned that for those who could not get into the sports that they want, there are many avenues/opportunities that they can still enjoy and play their sports/games like during recess time etc, I still think that the whole system is 'not' right. Children at their age should be given the opportunity to join a sport they are keen and from there they may be able to grow and develop with the help of a coach.ER:
Pinky88 thank you for the info on calc of MSG.
Is it true that only a small proportion of the students will get admitted into the clubs/society/sports CCAs ? What is the success rate of appeals? DS is not keen in U/G but heard from seniors that most students usually end up being assigned to one in that group.
They have been selling a lot of Koyok for UG and has made it a compulsory selection....so what do you think?
Anyway, can someone tell me more about the UGs. Would like to know major diff among scouts, NPCC and ST John ambulance. We were thinking of putting scouts as 1st choice but just realize that other than Fri, they need to go back for training on Sat morning as well. Is that true? For the rest of the UGs, understand the 2 trainings (min) are all on weekdays.

Hi Pinky88
1) Oral participation is based on the boys daily classroom participation. At e end if each term, e OP mks for individual subjects will b reflected on e progress report. Ttl 40% comes fm HC + best 3 subjects.yamatomato:
Have some questions on oral communication (OC) and indep studies (IS)
1) How is OC to be tested. It comprises 40% oral participation (10% HC and 30% from any best 3 subjects) with remaining 60% from current affairs (30% each fm EL and CL). How are the 40% and 60% to be tested? Based on daily classroom participation or a formal oral test?
2) For Ace under IS, so far there seems to be only something given out to the pupils for HCI. Anybody's ds has done something for ELL?
3) for computation of msg, there is total of 6 subjects of which at least 5 must come from exam subjects and the last can come fm non exam subjects?
Hope someone can enlighten me. thanks and good nite
For e current affairs, i'm not sure if there r any changes for e sec 1s. 2 yrs ago, HC is split into oral interview on current issues (10%) & debates (20%). EL- oral interview on current issues(10%) & role playing panel discussion(20%).
2) Dun worry abt ace, e teachers will tell e boys what to do & getting full mks for ace is not difficult if e boys put in effort.
3) MSG academic cal is based on ELL, HC, Maths, IH, LSS + Infocomm studies. If ur boy takes 3rd lang & achieve A1, it will also b included in e computation but for EOY exams, e boys hv to opt if they want to include e 3rd lang exam mks into e MSG computation b4 e exams.
MSG scholastic is MSG academic + OC + IS
Hope e above helps:)
Thanks for the clarifications.
Just a quick check. You mentioned that 3rd lang can be included but on condition that it is A1? If 3rd lang is to be included in the compuatation, does that mean that the MSG will then be divided by 7 subjects instead of 6?
Understand that for some schools, 3rd lang can be used to replace certain subjects for instance if your 3rd lang is A2 and history is B4, you can then use 3rd lang instead of history in the MSG computation. Is this not the case in HCI?
Many thanks
