    • RE: All About Choosing and Buying Pianos

      The Little Cheng Mommy:
hi, would like to find out if it's normal/unusual for a 2nd hand Kawai Japanese piano (20+ years old) to have rough feeling edges on the sides of the keys? Upon closer look, i discovered an 'unpolished' key on the piano. Also when I tried out, two of the keys were also rubbing against each other, thus producing an irritating vibration when played. I asked the staff and he told me every thing was original from Japan. He told me the keys rubbing against each other can be adjusted as it has to do with the width of the key.

I'm asking out of curiosity if his explanations were acceptable? As I find it unbelievable that a Kawai piano (us series) will have such flaws.
mine for Japan too. My keys are not rubbing each other though.. Perhaps you can ask the seller to adjust it properly?

Would like to find out anyone heard of jesley piano? Is it a reputable second hand piano dealer? Would like to find out more before heading down. Tia!

Also, im thinking of either china piano or second hand Kawai piano. Is 20 year old kawai piano consider very old? Usu what is the price of such second hand piano?
Never heard of jesley piano. but i own a second hand Kawai piano from Japan. around 20 years too.
all my keys have been changed and it looks like brand new. Bought it for $4.5k - a little bit pricey but my student bought a second hand kawai (around 10+ years) for $2.5k and the keys were not changed.
      just for your reference

      Hi,

By any chance, does anyone know a piano tuner who wants to tune Kawai old piano?
I have contacted a few tuner and none of them wanted to tune it as they scared to break any of the string. I understand the sparepart for Kawai piano is expensive.
Let me know if you have any piano tuner in mind!

Just a note to all, the tutor above is still in action. She has changed her name recently and according to her ex-student, a new scar on her face. The student confirmed the photo in one of the link was hers when she was younger. The ex-student showed up at my studio last week. We are left with 7 weeks to prepare for grade 5 theory exam. He only learnt the cycle of 5th and alto clef from her and he did not even have the grade 1 theory knowledge of note value. :x We are doing intense lessons now to make up for the lost time.

      Hi,

I would like advice on the following.

I have been going around looking at used pianos and there are 20 odd yrs pianos that are imported from Japan that look like brand new, as though you bought it new from Yamaha. They keys, hammers, strings etc that look totally white or unused, no sign of dust or wear and tear at all. Another shop that I went to also had used piano 20 odd yrs imported from Japan but they do show signs of wear and tear ie abit dusty, not pure white hammer and keys but still look quite new, but definitely can tell that they were second hand. The seller was telling me that the pianos are as it is, not reconditioned like some others that take out each key or hammer and replace a new one. The price for these almost brand new pianos are $1k higher than the other used pianos.

My question is would you condiser these brand new pianos, with higher price or are they totally reconditioned such that you do not know what are the parts and what you are paying for? Or it does not matter as long as when you play it, it sound alright, it feels alright, it has what a piano is suppose to do?

Appreciate your reply so that we can narrow down the search.
Hi! I had the same doubts last month when I was about to buy a piano. What I did was, I requested the seller to open up everything for me to see, including the white and black keys because I heard used pianos might have bugs/insects inside (not sure how true) if you haven't used it for quite sometimes. To my surprise, one of the sellers agreed to open up everything for me.

I was asking the same questions too, why the keys look so new - the answer is, it can be replaced! Apparently this seller replaced everything and make sure there is no scratch on the piano as he wanted to sell pianos which are in good condition. I bought a Kawai from him and he gave free 2 tunings, 1 umbrella, 1 tshirt, 1 metronome + free delivery + original receipt written in Japanese with some Japanese owner name on it! He claimed that the pianos are imported from Japan and hand picked by himself. -> you can visit his website : http://pianosfromjapan.com/

      - I earn nothing from this -

i bought my 2nd hand U1 from Shelley Piano (coming today! so exciting!)

Shelley shared w me that pianos are like cars, old make nevermind so long as well maintained and low mileage
he understood my concerns that while i am ok with 2nd hand pianos i would prefer a relatively younger one
we bought a japan made U1 (YU1 i tink, he explained that in japan there are diffrent models for U1) for 5300$
      serial number 61xxx so i checked http://usa.yamaha.com/support/finding_a ... aha_piano/, its approx 2005 model
May i know where did you purchase it? šŸ˜„
