    • RE: All About ABRSM Grades & Support

Thanks for all your response. i was just overwhelmed. When I got DD results and DD was so glad and proudly and confidently told me ‘I told you I can pass i played all correctly’. She is only 6 yrs old. Merit and distinction meant nothing to her. Her ‘correctly’ probably meant she did "all that she ‘thought’ was taught".

But being a pre-schooler, she is not mature enough to know how to play ‘musically’ probably lack of rhythm and such. She lack the ‘feel’ or what you would call the dynamic for music.I must say that the examiner was not wrong when she picked out all her mistakes as a very young player. But i must also say that i believe 108 is not her best. She got a high merit for a G1 practical which came as a surprise when she was 5.

i celebrated her achievement - the chromatic scales, the arpeggios, broken chords etc were all in place but loss marks because she hesitated at certain point. - This is perfectly normal to me especially when you played with a different audience in a different setting. I penned down the initial post here because i was frustrated why people cannot give her credit for the bravery in taking the exam but rolled eyes when they heard ‘oh just a pass’.

Oh gosh. Maybe this is Kiasu society. In a foreign piano forum, i read that this kind of achievement is greatly applaud.

Anyway DD is not forced to learn, she is happy and wants to learn and is both glad and excited that she can now play more "difficult" notes. We are not rushing. Like some of mentioned above, we sent her for exam to review her progress. She needs time to mature musically. She needs time to mature - I can’t really rectify that can i? Meanwhile pls don’t scorn her passing grades.

Indeed, one day her passing grade at grade 2 will be forgotten when she moves on. But the scorns that she got from uncles, aunties, older cousins etc will leave a scar in her quest to enjoy playing piano.

      Thanks for all your reply.

    • RE: All About ABRSM Grades & Support

Wow, seems like everyone is taking high grades. I was wondering if a pass only for ABRSM practical an indecent grade? Why is it that everyone i know seem to take about scoring merit or distinction with someone mentioning that a pass is a ‘bad’ grade. (?!) How can a pass be a bad grade(?!?)

What is your take for a 6 year old who just got a pass 108 for a grade 2 piano ABRSM exam? Thanks for your inputs.I thought she did well, but everyone around us is making it seems like she did awfully bad for a grade 2 pass which is suppose to be very easy. Gosh.
