      Hi dawnpingpong, unflappable chicken,

I understand that you are both current RGS girls. Thanks for your previous sharing.

Other than academics, I would like to find out more about leadership opportunities and roles available to Sec 1 girls eg. class chairperson/vice chairperson/student leaders etc. (any others?)
      1. Can interested pupils apply for the various posts? How are selections made?
      2. Is there a fixed number of vacancies per class or do numbers vary depending on the quality of the candidates?
      3. Are class chairpersons changed every term like in some Sec schools or do they remain for the whole year?
      4. Do student leaders continue in Sec 2?
      5. What about peer leaders and the student congress - are they open to Sec 1s?

I would greatly appreciate any sharing on this topic from any RGS girls or their parents. Thank you in advance.

      Cheers

Hi, I know this site is kiasu parents, but I have to say, you guys are really very kiasu leh hehe.

In Sec1, there aren't that many leadership opportunities. In fact, other from class chair/ vice chair (they remain in their positions for the entire year, unless there's a rebellion. Even then, it's not likely that they'll change), the only other avenue is this thing where selected Sec1 students will become Student Leaders (SL).
These SLs are selected by teacher nomination and interview, and there are 2 selections, one in Term 1 and one in Term 2. As far as I know, it's limited to 4 nominations per class for each selection. So in Sec1, you can't really just apply for a position, although you can indicate your interest to the teacher.
Each SL has a term of 1 term (pun? :D).They technically don't belong to any board, but they're given the authority to book people, like the prefects.
Although it is not confirmed that SLs will be in a leadership position in Sec2, they are more advantaged, in the sense that they are automatically sent for the selection camp at the end of Sec1, as compared to others who have to be teacher nominated.

You shouldn't worry too much, actually. Although the system isn't foolproof, and it certainly isn't perfect, if your daughter is really capable, she will have chances to shine, whether she is in a leadership position or not. Even then, it will be up to her to make full use of the opportunity, so there's not much use thinking too much about it now.

Relax, anyway the school year is going to start whether we like it or not. How exciting, hoho Sec4 here I come. šŸ˜Ž
