Parents, do pop in to share tips about how you’ve found good tutors for your kids! My youngest is 14. We’ve hired tutors for mostly CL2, as well as for maths and science in the PSLE years. For evaluating tutors: for us, it’s about the feedback that they give. Are tutors sensitive, to have certain conversations out of earshot? If they notice issues like carelessness, what’s the strategy for dealing with this? Do they just give practice papers week after week, or do they also retest? For English tutors, we haven’t hired any, but I think the evaluating factors might be: how do they speak/text in casual/conversational situations, and what materials are they using? We’ve avoided model essay books Hope to hear from others!

Happy Thursday! Hope all families and parents are looking forward to the end of the school and work week For all parents, we have just released an article discussing the topic of why small things matter in a child’s development. There is a tendency to look past the small things. A slightly untidy piece of work. A careless mistake in a familiar question. A rushed answer that “more or less” makes sense. Individually, they seem insignificant. Easy to correct. Easy to overlook. After all, what matters is the bigger picture: the final result, the overall performance, the eventual outcome. But over time, a quiet pattern begins to form. And it is within these small moments that something deeper is taking shape. Do give it a read and let us know your thoughts! • Are STEM DSA preparation programs really useful?

Hi lynnandaure, great question! My son went through the STEM DSA route last year (Sec 2) and I can share what we observed. The programs do help, but mainly in 2 ways: (1) they give structure and accountability — kids who self-learn coding often drop off after a few months, and (2) the portfolio becomes more organized with a coach reviewing the projects. That said, the actual interview matters a lot too — some kids with impressive portfolios fumbled because they couldn’t explain their projects well. My honest take: if your child is genuinely interested in STEM, the programs are worth it for the mentorship and portfolio polish. But don’t sign up just because everyone else is doing it — schools can tell the difference between genuine passion and a packaged portfolio. One thing that helped us at home: we used OmniBox Tutor (tryomnibox.com/tutor) for general STEM questions and homework help. It’s free and the AI explains concepts step by step, which took some pressure off during the DSA preparation period. Wouldn’t replace a proper program but great as a supplement.

Looking for a Suitable Home Tutor? (Sharing as a Parent Helper) Hi parents, I know how stressful it can feel when looking for a home tutor - especially when we all just want something suitable, safe and reasonable for our children. I help parents find and match home tutors based on their child’s needs. I’m not a tutor myself, but at Raffles Scholars we work with a pool of great tutors (ex-MOE teachers, Full-time teachers, and even student tutors who graduated from TOP schools like Raffles Institution and Hwa Chong). We do our best to recommend those who are appropriate for the child’s level, temperament and subject needs, as well as match your prices. There’s no pressure to commit, and our service is free of charge - my aim is simply to help parents make a more informed and comfortable choice. How I usually help • Listen carefully to what parents are looking for • Recommend tutors who are relevant and suitable • Try to match within a reasonable budget • Offer trial classes Some parents come to me because they don’t want to randomly try tutors, or they just want a second opinion before deciding. Levels & subjects commonly requested • Primary (all subjects) • Secondary (Express / NA / NT) • JC (Maths, Sciences, Econs, GP) Home tuition across Singapore, and online lessons are possible as well. 🤍 Just sharing, no obligation Please feel free to message me if: • You’re currently looking for a tutor • You’re unsure where to start • You just want to ask and compare options We have over 100 active and great tutors right now. Website - http://rafflesscholars.com WhatsApp - +65 8265 7732 Email - [email protected] After we chat even if you decide not to proceed, that’s perfectly okay. I understand every family’s situation is different. But at least you will be able to see what tutors are available, all their qualifications, and you can take your time to choose and decide what is the best option out there for your child. Wishing everyone all the best with your child’s learning journey

Home-Based Secondary AMath, EMath, Chemistry, Physics, Science and H1 Math Tuition by Experienced Full Time Tutor since 2008 2023 O Level Results, EOY Results and Testimonials on https://msywtutor.wordpress.com/ Ms Tan had experience teaching dyslexic students and they go on to achieve distinctions in school and national examinations, provides timely evaluation of students’ progress, customized practices and tests. “Highly committed teacher Effective teaching methods and principles Friendly yet firm towards student. Makes effort to complete make up lessons Frequent mini-tests keep student on toes” “Ms Tan’s lessons were really interesting and she made it so that I understood what she was teaching about. My grades on Mathematics no only met my expectations but also surpassed them by a great margin. My understanding of the concept also improved by leaps and bounds such that now I’m able to do complex questions within the recommended time limit and hence have extra time to check if I made a careless mistake. The lessons although were being conducted via zoom, were being held to the same quality offline such that I was able to better understand the topics that I was initially unclear on. All in all, I greatly recommend Ms Tan if you want to improve in your mathematics.” – 2020 “Thank you for teaching me Chemistry for the past half a year. You teach in a way that is simple and easy to understand. You made difficult concepts seem easy. Somehow you knew that I know how to answer the question but I do not know how to phrase my answers and as a result, you drilled me a lot on this which therefore led to me finally passing Chem this year. So I feel grateful and thankful towards you for being so accurate in finding out my weakness, correcting it and making me like studying Chem again. Without you, I don’t think I would be able to find the O level paper easy. May you continue to impact students and make them love Chem!” ’ Miss Tan has tutored me in Combined Science (Chemistry) and E Maths for my O Level Exams. She has an excellent teaching style that is easy to pick up on and for me to adapt to. I have had no problems understanding her teaching. She shows how to properly do a task or work through problems and from there, she helps me master the task or solution problem. I have since been able to independently solve fairly challenging questions for both Chemistry and E Maths. This is thanks to using her demonstrated methods. With her calm and friendly demeanour, I am unafraid to ask for help when I do not understand something. One of her best teaching methods is that she can easily summarise a complicated chapter into a flowchart or table, making it easier for me to retain in my memory and to recall during the examinations. I also appreciated her patience with me when she was tutoring me in E Maths. It gave me more confidence in trying out the questions as she did not “crowd” me for a correct answer. So thank you Miss Tan :)’ Home-based or online, 1-1/ group sessions Crash course programme is available too More info on my website (link below!) Thank you for viewing! @karynlim said in Feedback on www.playwrite.sg: Hi I have recently chanced upon this website called www.playwrite.sg and they seem to have quite good composition feedback: https://www.playwrite.sg/composition-marking Anyone has tried this? Hey — I saw that site too. No personal experience yet, but the composition-feedback offering looks good. If I were you I’d try a small package or demo first to see how useful the feedback is—and if it’s worth the cost.
