Is this behaviour of teacher acceptable?
-
Son can tell me when teachers scream and yell…they raise their voice about stuff related to work…it’s ok to him. He had strict teachers for several years and he is used to them. My point is, they must be reasonable.
-
DS was able to tell me that the strict teachers are the ones who truly care for the students because it takes more effort to enforce boundaries. My kids are more scared when I am indifferent - say nothing, do nothing.
DD always says that she wants mummy to scold and nag her. -
When we keep quiet, kids get more worried or scared…they’d rather we scold. Son would ask, ‘aren’t you going to scold or do something? Why are you so quiet? Scold me…just say something!’

XYZ1:
After reading the posts, i would like to share some views. Although I'm a parent myself, I tend to sympathize with the teachers nowadays:
1) current generation of parents 不是什么省油的灯, we do not hesitate to stand up for our children's rights and we are definitely more vocal. When i meet my dc's teachers, some of them make me feel like I'm customer and they are some customer service officers. Actually, i don't think it shd be like that bcos 这有损老师的尊严. My cousin is a student counsellor in a sec sch, she shared with me horror stories of how some parents defended the WRONG actions of their kids......这是个什么样的社会?
2) kids nowadays (pls do not flame me, i hv 2 myself) are definitely smarter and more cunning than our generation. (i'm born in the 70s), my ds came back from school telling me of the kind of things that his classmates (P3 only) say:
- C-B, F, xxx, vulgar words...my gosh! And these words are coming from kids
with good/middle class family background. According to my son, this is like
COMMON, best part is that these kids will not say it near teachers, only
within the classmates
- one classmate can tell my son that he will kidnap my son after sch and then kill him
Vulgarities are ban words in my house, if i hear my dc say it, be it accidental or intentional, i will slap their faces (not the big tight slap kind). They know my rule and will not test this.
3) Parents also need to remember that teachers are humans...humans in this era all under some sort of tremendously stressful lifestyle...and so are teachers, so i always feel that if i can cooperate with teachers rather than to blame them, i will.
Personally, i don't admire a teachers's job, it is so difficult to juggle teaching, marking, discipline a class of 30-40 students, admin work, cca work, supplementary work, and ... parents. (I really hope MOE can do more to relieve teachers of non-teaching related work) Hence, sometimes, a naughty act by a student in class is merely the 导火线 to trigger the teacher's explosion..i know teachers cannot and should not take it out on their students, but who do not have such moments...including ourselves? So the best is to make sure our kids behaved themselves decently in class?
I'm not a teacher, I'm an accountant, i had almost wanted to make a mid career switch to teaching...but decided not to for now.
Of course, there are always black sheep amongst teachers, just as in there are black sheep in many other professions as well, but generally, i think most teachers do a decent job. If there are back sheep, we as parents, should chiong all the way to protect our dc, but otherwise, i feel that the approach shd be more of a \"in partnership with teachers\" rather than blame.
This is just my humble view...do not flame me if u disagree...each to his own opinion.
Agree.
Help the teachers to help your children. -
teachers are humans…yes like what was mentioned, i certainly do not wish to be a teacher. however, some teachers can be so authoritative…they literally tell you and not discuss how best to bring out the child and work together…the tone sucks. having such a teacher, i feel put off as a parent facing her once a year.

I realized that it is better to meet teachers not during PTM. We can have longer time to discuss about our kids and our rapport is better because the teacher(s) will remember us. The teachers I had meeting with, told me about my son's weaknesses and tips on how to impove it. My son said those tips are not new but hearing them from the teachers ourselves made us put more effort in enforcing it e.g. read newspaper everyday. -
i am still nagging at him to pick up the newspapers...he only reads 'digital life' daughter does read oxford tree though.
as for meeting teachers, they are so busy. however, i do email daughter's teachers regularly. -

My son likes to read novels during meals. So, during breakfast I usually placed the previous day's Home section (that is the teacher's recommended ST's section) on the dining table and ask him to flip and read ONE article that he is interested in. If he does not read, he can't read his novelsi am still nagging at him to pick up the newspapers...he only reads 'digital life' daughter does read oxford tree though.

told him to read FRONT page of ST…that is the least i am expecting from him.

Don't nag or tell him to read the papers. Engage him in a discussion. Ask him what he thinks about the happenings in Singapore or around the world today. Tell him your views.i am still nagging at him to pick up the newspapers...he only reads 'digital life' daughter does read oxford tree though.

A quick way is to spend 15mins everyday just reading the editorial page (a quarter of a page) and then discuss about it along 4 main areas:
1) What are the explicit points made by the editor?
2) What are the implicit points or assumptions that the editor is trying to put across (must read between the lines, or see the big picture)
3) Which of these points do you agree with the editor?
4) Which of these points do you disagree with?
Do this consistently for a month and you will find he will start getting an interest in reading the rest of the papers because now he has a better understanding of the issues, thanks to your explanation.
