Chicken essence

Thanks for the discussion! The discussion gave me an idea to check the ingredients of the chicken essence. And guess what?? The one MIL gave has caramel! I will argue in the light of caramel as in Coke and Pepsi (can't say too much. Just google it if you want to know). Yippee!

Caramel can cause allergy? Like eczema? :nailbite: -

Sorry, I don't know about that. Based on my limited knowledge of eczema, I thought we need to observe what food/environment that caused the flare?ngl2010:

I only know that eczema and asthma are related. My paediatrician told me about that when our son had a bout of eczema when he was a toddler. He asked whether any of our family members suffer from eczema or asthma. My sister is asthmatic. -

I wasn't even aware that there is caramel in chix essence :slapshead: -

Is your DD allergic to caramel? Anyway, to be fair, not all chicken essence has caramel. You need to check the information on the bottle.

Isn’t caramel cooked sugar?
Your son is has allergic reaction to coke and pepsi? Or specifically caramel?
It is present in a lot of food. Hainanese Kaya, candies, etc.
If you use that to tell your MIL, what if she turns up with caramel free chicken essence? -

Last year, caramel used in Coke and Pepsi was found carcinogenic. It was a big news last year. I think they have since changed the caramel type. Anyway, I am going to use this selective information to argue with my DH why we should not give chicken essence to DS.Isn't caramel cooked sugar?

MIL is unlikely to find other brand. Anyway, she does not need to know that I am not giving chicken essence to our son. It is the DH that is the police in the house with regards to chicken essence. -
I wont encourage drinking chicken essence on a daily basis for young children. Quality sleep n balance diet should be more than enough.
For some adults who do not make good food choices when eating at hawker centres, I feel that chicken essence is a reasonably priced tonic.
There is a saying 药疗不如食疗
It is more important to eat right in our daily meals.
My MIL has been brewing tonics for my children every week since donkey years ago. I spoke to hubby about this. Ended up, hubby is responsible for consuming whatever his mum gives us. Occasionally, I will use the tonics in making porridge when the weather is fine and the children are not feeling unwell. -

Caramel is supposed to be made from sugar. But these days, commercially available caramel are full of dunno-what. Just take a look at the one sold in Mcd with its apple dippers

Eu Yan Sang Essence of Chicken does not contain artificial colouring, flavouring, caramel or preservatives.
If your hubby is insistent that your boy be given essence of chicken during PSLE days, u can try this Eu Yan Sang brand.
But I would suggest giving one to try during the Jun hols first. Children aged 12 and below, recommended dosage is 1/2 bottle. -

Most of the times, I buy kampong chicken eggs from the wet mkt. My younger boy says these taste better than the other eggs. Whether more nutritious or not, I hv no idea.
