Opinions of the Primary School Registration System

PRs have the choice of retaining their citizenship elsewhere. Is this by choice? Why wouldn’t you take up Singapore citizenship? If you can but you don’t then why complain you do not enjoy equal schooling rights as Singaporeans? didnt you choose to give up the entitlement in the first place ? Do u hope to enjoy the best of both countries?

Is there anybody who would deny himself the benefit of enjoying the best both worlds? 将心比心. I think most PRs accept that they should not enjoy the same benefits as citizens across the board. But there's a reason why they are called 'PR' and not 'foreigner'. -

If this is the case, how to achieve \"Every school is good school\" ?No matter how much you argue here, I believe the govt won't remove the alumni priority as most in parliament have vested interest. Their kids can enter the best schools because of this same scheme. They are the elites, mostly coming from good schools, now their children can enter their alma maters because of the existence of Phase 2A. It is here to stay.

On the same note, singaporeans who don't live and work in Singapore should have their citizenship revoked. If they are really connected to Singapore, they would be actively involved whether they are physically present in Singapore or not ... -

I am an alumni member, and my daughter goes to my alumni. There is more to an alumni member sending their children back to the school that they studied in than just going to a \"good school\".
Going back to a school that saw my growing up years brought back bitter sweet memories to me. I did, I admit, ask myself if I wanted to put her through the not-totally pleasant experiences I went through. But standing at attention, once again, while the school song played with my P1 daughter by my side, after a break of over 20 years, brought tears to my eyes. I share my reminiscences with my dd. Tales of playing in the field, falling over, climbing poles, trees, falling over, ghost in the primary school toilet ... And there's meeting old teachers at school events, meeting old classmates, sharing memories ... The traditions of fair play, holistically nurturing the child, giving back to society ... I am glad, after all, that she gets to share a part of my heritage.
However, I do agree with the argument that why can't other children have this great heritage to past on to their offspring. I do not wish to see the alumni phase totally abolished, but perhaps offered to alumni who continue to contribute actively to the school. -

Can you share which school (A, B, C or D) you volunteered in eventually and why? I always thought that people only choose one school to do PV at. You chose four and all four accepted you!
As for why I think PV breeds elitism, I feel that people will only volunteer at schools they think are 'good', and not everybody has the luxury of time or expertise to do PV. So PV scheme cuts off most of the working class from phase 2B.
I propose the dismantling of the PV scheme, together with the alumni priority scheme. But it is clear from the statistics that the alumni priority is the bigger problem by far in terms of numbers.
But not all have access to the information that they can PV -

Thank you! You captured what is in the mind of many parents out there with regards to sending their children to their alma maters. Diversity is never the intent of giving alumni priority in getting their children back into the schools. The purpose is tradition, the carrying of the torch, so that the ideals, principles, and culture that the schools hold dear can transcend the rigours of time and evolution. A child going to very school that his/her parents went is likely to have greater reverence for the place and its practices, and strive to do as well or better than his/her parents. A clan-like culture where the faculty, students and parents have shared-objectives promotes a sense of camaraderie, school spirit, loyalty and pride in the school beyond what can be offered by institutions that simply try to process each batch of students in and out as efficiently as possible.... While the current free-play given to alumni should certainly be looked at and tweaked to prevent abuse, the phase should be retained to prevent schools from being diluted into soul-less institutions. Perhaps the best way to do so is to restrict Phase 2A admissions to no more than 50% of places remaining after Phase 1, just like how Phase 2B and 2C are allocated. And yes, that would mean balloting even in Phase 2A. -

That sounds OK, but like Phases 2B and 2C, priority should be given to Singaporean children first.
