I have friends whose kids got into schools using sports…DSA thing.

Their kids spend MORE time singing (even to the extent of going overseas), swimming and running than studying. Whatever time is left at the end of the day has to be quickly spent on finishing homework before going to sleep…some may feel that this is encouraging kids to manage their time well…but is it really the case? There is no way out of this craziness. Day in day out, parents have to wake up at 5am to send the kid to the school swimming complex. A friend couldn’t get her daughter out of this…went overseas to continue education at 15.

I think different kids have different learning capabilities. Not all kids are born to be smart but we can always give them extra help like tuition if they need. Not all kids are born to be smart and can do without tuition, I would love for my kids to have no tuition and that they can learn by themselves.

          JW1000:

Honestly, I don't think that there is a need for tuition. In my case, my two daughters have already taken their PSLE and gotten 270(both of them), and they doesn't have any tuitions, but I recommend you to buy books(Science) with clear explanation of answers and for Maths, there is nothing you can do but practice, but you have to let your children/ child understand the concepts for the questions, especially in algebra.

If you have any questions that your child does not understand, you can send it to me and I will tell my daughter to explain it to you.

          :celebrate:

          JW1000,
congratulate on the stellar results achieved for the PSLE, but do be modest with your posting. this forum is to share ideas and approach towards a holistic education platform, of which the education ministry is currently working on. students are encourage to participate actively in both CCAs and CIPs besides the classes, textbooks, worksheets, tutorials, tests, exams ... the list goes on. in a state of realistic approach, the learning curve of every kid differs, not forgetting their needs too, parental and peers' support, the school/learning institution, classmates, teachers ... do be objective and conservative in your posting, we do appreciate that ... Three Cheers to all Parents with kids pursuing the PSLE 2013, One Word of Encouragement \"Keep Steady, Be Diligent, Do Your Best, Keep It Up, Enjoy Learning\" ...

          Thank you, Poet2010. 😃

Every child is unique and has different needs...and their environment is different with different types of support of different degree...so well, we all wear different lens and have different opinions...and we parents are just trying our best to provide the best to our kids with what we have and what we know.

            Hi

Need some advice. My DD, generally does well in all subjects, but when it comes to exams her results are not good. I have no idea what goes on during exams that she performs so badly. She too does not know why. Does she need professional counselling? Am worried as she is going in for PSLE this year…

Any help from any parents out there will be much appreciated…

                Hi myangels,

Sounds like both you and your child are unaware of what actually happened during the exam.

Hmmm...professional counselling may work but it depends on the style of the counsellor and the therapy and the model s/he used. However, having been in social work practice for almost a decade, the not that strong point of counsellors in this aspect is that they may not be familiar with the new education syllabus and the concepts they have to study. Yes, counsellors are very good with the therapy side but if you need a good one, you need to find counsellors who are specialising in educational side...maybe school counsellors are better fit...

As an individual, we may want to explore the possibilities that may happened in an exam...

                1. totally blank...forgetting everything that she has studied.

                2. panic...while doing the questions but because of the emotional state, there is room of mistakes to happen and that includes careless mistakes which can be costly.

                3. anxiety...being nervous and anxious even prior to entering the exam hall and thinking of all the possible bad things that can go wrong...

                4. triggered events...someone or something triggered her to go back to the times when she felt down in one of the previous exams...it could be something a classmate says or a similar happening in class...

however, this is not the entire list and sometimes it can be a combination of a few...

i want to know more aboout \"generally does well in all subjects\"...how do you define this?...is it based on marks?

Love to hear from you so we can explore more...

                John

                  Hi Peace Charlie,

Sounds like it is not easy for your child and you...

One way is to analyse her paper after she has gotten back...first, you want to check for careless mistakes...from my experience, careless mistakes can cost the child many marks, sometimes up to 20 marks and it made a difference between a just fail grade or a B or an near-A grade...

right now, I think what's best for your family is to analyse the papers together after she has gotten back her paper...i suggest that you can continue to reassure her...Since you have a tutor, get her help to do it too...

                  Hope this helps...

                  John

Speaking about careless mistakes in Maths, son always lost marks in his Maths test due to carelessness. In the recent SA1, he lost 7 marks due to simple calculation such as 3-2= 2, 18/2=6, 7+8=14 etc. He has no problem to attempt the problem sums or any challenging questions. Wonder how I can help him to overcome this?

take a look at the questions...it's not possible to know what went wrong yet.
sometimes (many times) difficult questions could be set. there could be several reasons.
