        myangels:
        Hi

Need some advice. My DD, generally does well in all subjects, but when it comes to exams her results are not good. I have no idea what goes on during exams that she performs so badly. She too does not know why. Does she need professional counselling? Am worried as she is going in for PSLE this year...

Any help from any parents out there will be much appreciated...

        worried mum
        Hi myangels,

Sounds like both you and your child are unaware of what actually happened during the exam.

Hmmm...professional counselling may work but it depends on the style of the counsellor and the therapy and the model s/he used. However, having been in social work practice for almost a decade, the not that strong point of counsellors in this aspect is that they may not be familiar with the new education syllabus and the concepts they have to study. Yes, counsellors are very good with the therapy side but if you need a good one, you need to find counsellors who are specialising in educational side...maybe school counsellors are better fit...

As an individual, we may want to explore the possibilities that may happened in an exam...

        1. totally blank...forgetting everything that she has studied.

        2. panic...while doing the questions but because of the emotional state, there is room of mistakes to happen and that includes careless mistakes which can be costly.

        3. anxiety...being nervous and anxious even prior to entering the exam hall and thinking of all the possible bad things that can go wrong...

        4. triggered events...someone or something triggered her to go back to the times when she felt down in one of the previous exams...it could be something a classmate says or a similar happening in class...

however, this is not the entire list and sometimes it can be a combination of a few...

i want to know more aboout \"generally does well in all subjects\"...how do you define this?...is it based on marks?

Love to hear from you so we can explore more...

        John

          Hi Peace Charlie,

Sounds like it is not easy for your child and you...

One way is to analyse her paper after she has gotten back...first, you want to check for careless mistakes...from my experience, careless mistakes can cost the child many marks, sometimes up to 20 marks and it made a difference between a just fail grade or a B or an near-A grade...

right now, I think what's best for your family is to analyse the papers together after she has gotten back her paper...i suggest that you can continue to reassure her...Since you have a tutor, get her help to do it too...

          Hope this helps...

          John

Speaking about careless mistakes in Maths, son always lost marks in his Maths test due to carelessness. In the recent SA1, he lost 7 marks due to simple calculation such as 3-2= 2, 18/2=6, 7+8=14 etc. He has no problem to attempt the problem sums or any challenging questions. Wonder how I can help him to overcome this?

take a look at the questions...it's not possible to know what went wrong yet.
sometimes (many times) difficult questions could be set. there could be several reasons.

I can feel how much stress we need to go thro’ in PSLE. Even for P4, exam period period is really stressful. I am very worried too.

Some very good schools set tough questions in SA1 n their teachers will tell the students \"for those who passed, it means you are good.\"

A mom shared this with me n her daughter is the one out of the 7 who passed.

Imagine how the other students feel...especially those who didn't pass.

                      Sigh.

usually, most schools will set tough papers for P6 SA1, it's just a wake-up call and push the kids towards the final hurdle to clear the PSLE. No worries, just focus on motivating your child and give unconditional love and support! :rahrah: If your kid been very consistent fro P1-P6, the minor drop in SA1 in P6, don't sweat over it. They will overcome and go on to score in PSLE...and enter the school of their choice.

The fact is, we parents MUST manage our own expectations, we know that each child is different, and we know their ability and capability. As long as you aware and make a deliberate effort to manage your own expectations it's alrite! Been always sharing with friends and relatives, every child is different, accept who they are! A shark is still a shark and even there are different species of shark !

The greatest mistake from Parents, demanding a cat to become a lion! beyond what a child can achieve, then the child will be stressed out and to the xtreme ,something happened!:xedfingers: Give unconditional support and love!
