NYGH(nanyang girls' high school) is an extremely popular secondary school, especially for top schorlars. Many people try their best to get in by DSA to try and secure a place there. my oldest daughter was one of them. back then, i really supported her in her dream to go to nanyang. but now i really regret it. theyear has barely started and she has already been getting nightmares everyday and seems to be undergoing depression. i m extremely worried about her. i personally feel that this is caused by her school work. she has to stay up till 2am in the morning just to complete her homework very often. i really regret sending her to nanyang. it has caused her mental well-being to become extremely unhealthy and now she is even undergoing counseling at a professional counsilor . i would advice all parents to think twice before sending your daughters to nanyang.

Very sorry to hear about your DD. For your DD to have got in means your DD has got the necessary ability to perform well :salute: so perhaps it could be an issue of time management.

I have seen other nanyang girls who seem to be enjoying themselves and when u speak to them, they tell u that time management is impt. so much so that they also have time to go for competitions overseas (the girl i spoke to was in 1st year nanyang a few years back).

I think you should take heart and sit down with her to see where the anxiety is coming from.

What level is your daughter in now? My daughter in sec 2 have quite a bit of homework to do and stuff....

I am sorry to hear that yr daughter is depressed or mentally affected due to the school workload of NYGH.
I shd say that not only in NYGH, in any other IP schs.....(probably small degree of difference)
the load of homework and projects given to pupils are indeed demanding ....
But in yr1, frankly speaking, the stress and workload is the lowest, shd one compared to yr 3 and beyond....
It is not uncommon to hear students fr various IP schs,
who need to stay up past midnite to get homework done, meeting projects' deadline or revising for tests....

Perhaps, she is still Not used to the fast paced sch life, give her some time to adjust and learn to work faster...
And yes, prioritise her schwork and time management is critical.....

Another thing which i often have go remind my gal....that is....
Dont be a perfectionist..( esp in project work, she would edit and edit again, till she is satisfied with it)
though that sounds good....so as to handup a \"perfect piece of work\" and hopefully to get higher marks.....
But there are simply too much schwork to be done within the deadline,
Sometimes, having 2 tests, chinese spelling (graded) or project deadline, ALL falling on the same day.....
So try to work out a balance.....be realistic.....

I'm P6 and aiming for schools focusing on Science ^^ NUS and SST are top choices although the chances of getting in are extremely slim. My senior who graduated last year got into SST. And well.. I would say peer influence is greater actually. We see our peers everyday, and we might look up to some of our peers. For me, even though I'm is 6E and my results are higher than average, i think it's still quite hard. So peer influence isn't actually 'healthy'. It's better to have parental influence as parents are the ones who experienced it and knows more

You need to DSA to NUS and SST. Have you checked their DSA dates? If you can't get in, there are also other secondary schools that you can apply after the PSLE results are released. Right now, I think it is better you concentrate on your study rather than go to kiasuparents forum

Hi, both school are via dsa and while result could be a factor, there are also other things they look for in a applicant. Make sure you dont miss any of the dsa datelines... If you need guidance, do come back here.

Do keep an open mind about other school system as well... Theres a lot of options out there...

You can try dunman sec too . It does focus on science and it is another choice just in case the marks come out not as expected
Do not think too much and just sit for the paper too much pressure is not good

Anderson Sec has good in Science programme & facilities too.
