Smart TV

ChiefKiasu:
The real reason for the price difference is in the screen size. At sizes beyond the more \"standard\" 40\" to 50\", LCD panels can vary very much in prices due to the smaller market for these panels.
Thanks Ah Chief!
But errr....still can't get the full picture...
When picture 'blur', I presume it has nothing to do with the resolution but rather the 'refresh rate'?
Just a very general advice, is it safe to just settle on the 70\" Sony (the 75\" Samsung is very high tech that comes with what face recognition, hand-tracking detector, etc. Think too 'high tech' other than the PRICE...) -

Sorry... missed your post. TV images could be blur due to several reasons:
Thanks Ah Chief!
But errr....still can't get the full picture...
When picture 'blur', I presume it has nothing to do with the resolution but rather the 'refresh rate'?
1) Low resolution. The standard
VCD resolution is 352x240,
DVD resolution is 720x480,
Half-HD (720p) resolution is 1280x720,
Full-HD (1080p) resolution is 1920x1080
The higher the resolution, the more pixels, and so the pictures become better defined. All full HD TVs today have at least 1920x1080. But keep note that the larger the TV, the larger the pixels. This would make the picture look coarse if you stay close to the screen. So if your TV is larger than 60\", you should look for those with resolution even higher than 1920x1080. Some 84\" TVs have resolutions of 3840x2160! This makes the image super sharp despite the size of the TV.
2) Frame rates. The higher the frame rate, the smoother the action :). I have explained this earlier.
Just a very general advice, is it safe to just settle on the 70\" Sony (the 75\" Samsung is very high tech that comes with what face recognition, hand-tracking detector, etc. Think too 'high tech' other than the PRICE...)
When buying bleeding edge technology, know that you are ahead of the curve and you are paying for the uniqueness of being the first to own the technology. But as an early adopter, you will be fully exposed to all the problems, glitches and issues that accompanies the prestigeSo you have to be very tolerant.
Also, most likely, the technology will become mainstream in a couple of years' time, in which case the device you purchase will be superceded by better technology at a cheaper price point.
Personally, I would go for a 3D projectorBut if I'm forced to choose between the Sony and the Samsung, I'll just choose the cheaper option to avoid feeling the pain when the TV gets obsolete in a couple of years' time

Our TV died!
It's so sad cos I have literally lost an able babysitter!

Funny story was...

http://i39.tinypic.com/52kmfp.jpg\">
Sales guy said there was no such promotion, when asked about stock availability. Went to the iPad in store and showed the fella the promotion information and he said he would get his supervisor to clarify. Well, cut story short... it was published hor. Hubs just went in store upon my suggestion to look at the actual product and their features+actual resolution after short listing two of the Smart TVs. The other was a 46\" Samsung with 4 3D glasses thrown in plus some other mambo jambo. I personally preferred the Phillips because we already tried out a Samsung TV once. Ekkh.. Dunno arh, seems like the Samsung stuff we have purchased before wasn't exactly aesthetically pleasing or sturdy.Mebbe i am biased oso.
Plus, I reminded him how buying Samsung (a few times / other items... that he indirectly supported another football club in the Premier League.
Supervisor clarified with another atas person before whispering, we'll sell ya this TV for $100 less if you can cash and carry it now. Hubs immediately said, \"Deal. I go make payment.\"
The salesperson later told hubs, if hubs didn't geddit... he would. :skeptical:
:imcool:
Later just after finalizing the stock and the nitty gritty talk, they said they are willing to let him add on a blu-ray home theatre set for only $299 and they led him to it to feel the beat. Long story short, he came home with a new Smart TV and the home theatre.
Finally, my new babysitter arrived. When time to test it out... the Smart TV in my humble opinion, does bring TV to a whole new level. He showed me how i can sit back on the sofa and surf KSP! To which i told him, errr hun.. i don't surf KSP that much aniwaes, PSLE mah. :imanangel: Eh? They even have a Playboy App that can be downloaded! I suspect that could have jolly well been the selling point. :faint:
The new Smart TV is somewhat too clear i think (now) when watching at the same distance when we used to watch our LG Plasma TV. Or, it's just a case of adjusting to it as time goes on.
So far, the new babysitter has performed up to expectations these last few days. No problem when paired up with our MioTV or via Wifi or via smart phone. Hubs used his S3.. i have yet to try it out on my iPhone. Don't ask me about the Playboy episodes. I didn't download the app. :imanangel:
Mebbe nearing PSLE bah, when i need new tips to destress. -

Lol. Yeah... the smart tvs these days pretty much eliminate the need to buy external media players. I don't even have a blueray player at home. All my movies on harddisk... Supervisor clarified with another atas person before whispering, we'll sell ya this TV for $100 less if you can cash and carry it now. Hubs immediately said, \"Deal. I go make payment.\"
...
Which one did you finally buy? The Phillips or the Samsung? How much arh?
PS. Plasma TVs are notorious for dying in most dramatic and permanent ways with no means of recourse. Mine died too after only 4 years. $4200 up in smoke. -

The \"clarification\" mentioned in the post was for the Phillips (i posted the link up there in that post).Since, they made the hoohaa abt \"where got such promo?!\"..... they offered $100 extra discount for cash and carry. The offer was actually valid as an online offer when i re-read it. Online offers come with free delivery for items $200 and above.
ChiefKiasu:
Yeah boi.. going by practical reasons it does pretty much eliminate the need for external media players as you said.. our dvd was unfriendly and only played a certain region code. :slapshead: The boys get frustrated and i get frustrated when we cannot play some of the educational dvds that we have which can still be played from our DDs days... yuh, can last that long, not bad uh?Lol. Yeah... the smart tvs these days pretty much eliminate the need to buy external media players. I don't even have a blueray player at home. All my movies on harddisk
You use harddisk for your movies? Elaborate can? :please:ChiefKiasu:
The handsome, Phillips. $1399 for the handsome 47\" 3D Full HD Smart LED TV. Quite a mouthful to say all of that! :rotflmao:Which one did you finally buy? The Phillips or the Samsung? How much arh?
ChiefKiasu:
I didn't know!PS. Plasma TVs are notorious for dying in most dramatic and permanent ways with no means of recourse.
The ILs came over that day and suddenly the trusty LG beauty chose to die on me. What timing, aye? That's what i call drama wor. :rotflmao: It's not just me feeling that the ILs can really get to me. Now the TV totally proved that too!:siam:
It would turn on for 5 sec and suddenly auto off. Prior to that, there was a thin line that came on when we changed channels. That was like 1 week. The shadow line across the screen got wider and then the 5 sec on then off. The critical ICU period was like max 2 weeks?ChiefKiasu:
Our LG Plasma lasted more than 5 years and it cost us $800 nia, from IT show. Sitex @ EXPO. I told him good things must wait.... he refused, so i waited until that $800 deal they were auctioning over the stage.Mine died too after only 4 years. $4200 up in smoke.
So, tho it was $800 up in smoke... not as heart pain as your $4200. -

Umm, actually can download step by step as to how to change the region. different brands have different ways, just press a few keys in the prescribed manner and voila! you get to set the region for your player (or set it to all regions). -

I've not had a Phillips equipment for almost 10 years... The handsome, Phillips. $1399 for the handsome 47\" 3D Full HD Smart LED TV. Quite a mouthful to say all of that! :rotflmao:
Does it have a network port for you to connect to the Internet and watch Youtube and stuff? If so, it should be DLNA ready, which means it should be able to connect to your local network storage and play videos without requiring you to copy them to the TV. Alternatively, you can put the video on a thumbdrive or harddisk and connect to it via its USB port.

Yes, it's the famous line of death. For plasmas, when a pixel goes bad, the entire row goes bad. And it will keep growing. It's quite terminal. RIP.It would turn on for 5 sec and suddenly auto off. So you have watched any 3D movies yet? That's the good part about a 3D TV -
Smarten up your TV for internet content and also as a media server! While it is great that phone and TV company started to tie up their gadgets but they often stick with own family products. What we have set up in our house is using open source so that any gadget can work with each other and we are not limited to the content provided by any company .
We use a RaspTV (a variant of xbmc) in our house, so we have our media in the NAS - photos, musics, home videos, and we can also watch programme from Youtube and from other internet channels. All of these we can watch on our HD TV. So I can watch my masterchef, chinese serials and korean serialsIf you have apple products that support airplay, you can also \"project\" the contents from apple products to the TV. The control is quite cool, can use remote control or ipad, very visual. To me, it is also a way that I organise my CDs and DVDs. I used to misplace my discs to wrong casing, now it is all browse through my NAS directory and I can just select and play
Here's a website that carries the RaspTV, and it is also running a charity that helps children to own a \"mini\" computer for educational purpose: http://piinthesky.wix.com/home. -

I have an android box and I tried to use XBMC on it, but it only supports streaming of local HD media. When I try to stream it via my NAS, performance drops drastically. That's a pity because I love XBMC. -
ChiefKiasu:
How about sell away your Android box and use RaspTv?

Yes the rasptv uses hardware decoding for processing 1080P HDTV video, even from NAS. However, for audio, it is recommended that the passthrough mode is used with a dts capable device.
The rasptv is base on the openelec variant of xbmc. You can get a better sense of its capability here http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Raspberry_Pi/FAQ . Here is also a youtube video on how well it runs
