Choosing and Evaluating Primary Schools

The younger one, an average will bound to have difficulties working on English and Maths when he goes P1.

I am concern with how the school helps the child integrates into primary school. We highlighted some issues to school about my elder's learning difficulties but it was not addressed due 3 years later. Though younger one do not have such issues, I have lost confidence in the school. However, sending them to different schools would also mean more inconvenience for us.

Wow! Your child understood number bond at age 6? My boy only understood number bond when he was in P1.

My younger child is very slow in learning. In P1, teacher although will teach, the speed is fast.My younger child not a fast learner, have to learn earlier. I have enough horror stories from my elder on how classmates failed the test. One failed throughout the year although have been put in LSP program has sinced transferred out from the school. very demoralising

We have a boy who will be P1 in 2014 and he is Brazilian-Korean. We are a foreign family living in the central area but our home is closed to all these school.


After searching many things, we finally realize that it is practically impossible to put him in Anglo-Chinese Junior or Rivervally Primary School.

Is there anybody who can comment about these 3 primary schools?
- Stamford (1 km from our home:central)
- Farrer Park (1.4 km from our home:Kallang)
- Balestier Hill (3.8 km from our home:Novena)

I found out these 3 schools are not so popular among the local parnents(by the way why??? ) which can be option for foreigners…

We cannot afford those international schools because once you start, you need to commit till highschool and oversea university…Any comment will be highly appriciated…

One more thing… is it better and easier to register him from P1 or we still have the chance to move him to the local school when he is P2 or P3?

We can send him a couple of years to the international school by scraching our pocket…

Our family will live in Singapore for long term and my boy will probably finish his highschool education in here… So the best option for him is to heading to local schools…

Many smart and experienced parents, please give me some advices~~~~~~

My youngest also only learn number bond in P1. i vomitted lots of blood. Your #2 can understand the number bond concept at 6yo very good already.

If you have a daughter -
Is there any reason why you'll put her into mgs, instead of st nick primary (your alma mater ) ?

this was 10 years ago, so i don't know if it's still the same.. but as an example, we used to scream like mad to cheer for our friends or school during school event. so it's less 含蓄. being playful was one of the reasons why i met more 钉子 along in life. so i prefer if my daughter was more girly, maybe quieter. but for myself, st. nicks gave me an exciting school life which i would choose over again. (not saying mgs is boring.. i never had the opportunity to experience sch life there.)

edit: i think quieter = easier to teach

i don't think there's an absolute right or wrong, better or worse. just sharing with you what i think was the main differences, and how parents envision their child growing up?

i guess the main issue is if i skip 2A2, he might not end up in any of my choices.. and chongfu is a safe option.. right?

distance is an issue, and i don't think they have school bus services all the way to bukit panjang? i've consider renting a place in yishun, but my mum is the main care giver, don't think i can or should move her. i'd prefer mummy to follow than after sch care. my mum's idea is greenridge > west spring.

hmm.. ah well. will take into consideration. ask my son to toss coin if all else fails. :xedfingers:

As long as there's balloting, the rules regarding nationality and distance will be enforced.

My son is going to P1 in 2015. I have 3 schools to consider…Pei Chun (phase 2A2), St Andrew’s (phase 2A1) and Maris Stella(phase 2C<1km). Can anyone advise me on thes schools in terms of sch environment, teachers and maybe standard?

Just go to Pei Chun (SAP, mixed) or SAJS (Christian, boys). They are all more popular than Maris, unless you want to walk to school and enjoy a Catholic SAP environment. I don’t think you are that far from Pei Chun from where you live.
