Since a new principal came in a few years ago, the school disallow children carrying more than 4kg. From time to time they conduct checks. Since then, we only buy bags that are very light (no layering, no extra padding, etc) like those from Nike. It is also cheaper compared to the previous bags we had such as ergonomic bags, bags with wheels, etc.


By the way, please don’t think too long term. My son refused to carry anything with cartoon pictures on it since P4, so some bags gone wasted.

Actually, most of the time it's the kids who carries more things than the need to. Extra story book when they need to bring only one... unnecessarys stationery items like hole punchers, staplers etc. pack of animal kaiser cards etc. So it's a good initiative that schools are proactive in getting the kids not to bring unnecessary items to school. Having said that, most people focus only on the weight of the bag. How you carry the bag is equally important.

Very often, the shoulder straps aren't tightened properly and the bag goes drooping down below the waistline and the kids walk around slouching forward. Padding is nice to have but are just for comfort on the skin. What is more important is that the bags have a reinforced base that allows the bag to sit on its own on the floor and withstand wear and tear... and also have a frame that allows the child to carry the bag without feeling the strain on her shoulders and spine. In this regards, the German bags are great. If you can't afford the price tag, there are cheaper alternatives including Dr Kong and Totem.

Wow, up to $300 for children's school bags is a bit overly priced even if they are space techonology ergo. It's not as if kids walk miles and miles to their schools. I think the moment they go up the school bus n reach the classroom, the bags aren't ludged around much.

The $300+ bags includes than the bag, which has sports bag, pencil case, pencil set etc. some even got water bottles. Some more they give warranty, which I think is 3 years. So definitely worth it. But you have the option of buying just the bag which should be more affordable.

It's getting very worn out but she loves it very much. We got the blue(Not much of a girl color but she likes it) Smart-lite special. Very spacious and lots of nice compartments. Got it at Somerset KinderFun shop at $120. So expensive... Still, not complaining:)

Yeah, Dr Kong is great in my opinion. It;s cheap compared to other ergo bags. But my girl don't like the designs and say they are... TOO fancy... But some are OK, like the \"Braving the wind \" ones. We got the SPI bag in blue, they protect my gal's spine.

It only has lots of cushioning and that’s all. You can bend the bag easily and the bag doesnt sit on the floor… it topples instantly. Not ergonomic at all. The material should be long lasting but the bag itself isn’t different from a good old Samsonite which sells for less than half the price.

Tanjack77 if you think the SPI bags are not a choice then you can choose Impact or Deuter or Dr Kong. I'm not objecting your opinion but since my gal likes the SPI bags then I got it for her. It stands up properly only for some of them. Impact is great and is also ranged between $99 and $110. Cheaper brands should be Dr Kong. Thanks

may i know from which level (P4 or P3) onwards, the school require te students to use pens instead of pencils? does it apply to all the pri schools?

I got the German Ergobag from Wheelock Place. I tried the adult version Satch and it was extremely comfortable even fully loaded with books. It has internal frames like those high end hiking gear and army backpack, except that it’s so refined that you can’t see the frame at all. It comes with 3 year warranty.
