plus the heat will still gets in through brick walls. Usually brick walls will retain the heat for quite some hours.

Not easy to shop for solar film

          :scared:

for example, for 3M there are 3 series, each with a number of ranges. Plus there is the option of applying on one side or both sides of the window panel, plus the option of mixing the type if applying on both sides.

Some years back, I came across a brand that have thicker film which is said to help reduce noise too. Just can’t remember the name.
Go for blinds la!

I already have blinds, and like i said, it's like a furnace...

I dun think curtains will help much.

The study room has double curtains, still feels very hot.

My boy's bedroom has blinds, also feels hot. I just shifted his study table away from the window. The ceiling fan must be on to circulate the air.
Yes, there must definitely be air circulation to remove the heat that could accumulate in an enclosed setting exposed to heat. If the room is mostly covered by glass windows, heat (sunlight gives heat too) can build up quickly. If got blinds, can block some of this heat. If got good curtains (that cover better/more than blinds) then can block even more heat. But there is still going to be heat in the room from radiation, so if this heat is not dissipated by fan, the room will still be hot.

Is it effective in making the house cooler even by a few degrees? I am staying on the top floor & I think my windows are the source of heat absorption esp on freaking hot days. Thinking of getting those DIY films from Amazon or getting pp to do it. Any difference?

It might if you always keep your windows closed. But if you staying at the top floor, it might be a better idea to keep windows open and leave it to convection to cool your place.

I have installed in it our study room. It helps somewhat, but if you drive and your car has solar film installed, you'll understand that just by reducing the amount of heat going through the glass is not sufficient, as you also need air circulation (fan) or even cold air (aircon) to reduce temperature further.

If the windows are closed and there is no fan or aircon, heat will build up and even with the best solar film, it's still gonna be hot and stuffy after a long enough time, as there will be radiation and greenhouse effect.

And I'm not sure what film you're considering getting from Amazon, but I'll be worried about the quality and specs of the films for a start. There are i think a lot of installers around probably with not that much to do now, as the number of new cars has dropped significantly and these installers who primarily installs the films for cars would have less biz than during car boom period.

There's some discussion on this in another thread:

oops, didn’t realise that there’s another thread on this too.

Thanks for sharing your findings atrecode. They are very helpful info. May I know roughly how much did you pay for your installation if you don’t mind? I intend to install it in my study & living room.

The solar film is meant to complement our aircon to help to keep the rooms cool without maxing out my aircon! We are using it almost the whole days when we are in. When not using aircon, we will open up all windows & doors. That’s why it fits us.

The other way is to get an air-circulator fan. But the reviews seemed mixed.

                        Hi,

I got our whole house outfitted with the solar film as our living room gets the hot morning sun and our bedrooms get the blazing afternoon sun. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

I wish we had done it earlier. We chose the type that not only has a sunscreen layer, but also reflects heat away so the room doesn’t heat up. It is bliss. An added bonus, the neighbours can’t see into our apartment if we close the windows. You will have to get used to the room being a little darker than usual. For us, that was a small price to pay… or rather, it’s not very cheap. We ended up paying below $1000 for the whole house. We have a lot of windows.

                        Hope that helps.
