My 7 yrs old piano boy has been learning piano for 2 yrs but till now still at the beginner stage. Reason giving by the teacher is my boy’s skill is no good and needs lots of practices. She refuses to go on to the next piece n practically I nvr see her giving good praises other then scolding n shouting every lessons. I told her to use another soft approach towards to my boy but she refused and said that teaching music is different. My two nieces are with her too n 1 of them is doing well and the younger one is not. And the tcr did hinted my sil to drop the younger one since no progress. We started to feel that the tcr is selective on her students n only keen in teaching better students. I m hesitating to change tcr but on the other hand my 2nd boy is doing well under her. I m also wondering if it’s my younger boy doesnt hv any talent in music and I should consider to drop him out instead. -
I believe different kids strive under different teachers. There is no one size for all. If certain kids are doing well under the teacher that means she is doing something right, just that her way of teaching suits some more than others. If every child needs talent to start learning or even to carry on then really there won’t be that many pianists. The ones with talent will make it to the top of the pile. Others will learn and enjoy, have it as a skill. Learning music involves discipline, practice must be consistent to see desired result. Parents play a very important role esp if the kids are young. There is a huge difference when the kid has put in the time and effort to practice, even if it is a repetitive way of practising. The results will of course be more significant if the practice is done properly - knowing how to execute it

Jce's words are spot on. Nonetheless, I am quite surprised that your boy's teacher refused to change approach even after some feedback. I concur that probably your sons' teacher is a very result-oriented teacher and she believes that the main satisfaction of learning piano is derived from playing pieces well and doing well for exams. Now obviously self-motivated students with good discipline and desire to do well can do well under such teachers, but I would say a significant amount of students I have encountered would just like to enjoy music they are playing and passing exams from time to time; their emphasis are not on excellence in playing but on enjoyment of the process. An excellent piano teacher would be able to tailor made his/her approach according to the student's learning need. So for example, to a student who is highly self-disciplined and wants to get distinction for exams, the teacher can be more strict and straightforward in lessons. But for a student who is not so keen at the moment, a more relaxed learning approach focusing more on exploration would be more suitable.Hi

You have done the right feedback in asking the teacher to modify her approach. It is unfortunate that the teacher is not flexible; the next logical course of action is to find a new teacher for your first boy. And I fully agree with jce regarding talent. I myself was deemed of having no talent in piano by my own parents and they refused to provide me lessons initially, but I persevered and managed to get my degree in music performance. So don't discount your son just yet, it could be just that he needs someone else's guidance to bloom. -
