Hi everyone, just one week into new academic year and all tired already?

My DD1 school has started CCA selection and parents and daughter's wish are in conflict...how to resolve that? Maybe just let the school decide will do...

Parents wish she takes up MEP related CCA but she likes sports (especially badminton). While she has no formal training in sports...i think it is not a wise way to achieve points.

I always hear one must choose interest over anything else. In order to gain CCA points, I do not think head should always rule...must depend on heart also. Right?

(at this juncture, how i wish i am in the shoe of 2ppaamm...need not think too hard because she only goes for least time required, least participantion and least effort school CCA just to fulfill attendance requirement, 好羡慕啊)

By taking MEP related CCAs has the effect of 'killing two birds with one stone (一石二鸟)'...correct me if i am wrong.

I think MEP related CCAs include band, string ensemble, choir, chinese orchestra, school performances etc..no? I am not too sure yet as I leave most of the reading to my wife while I 'kay po' around KSP.

Thanks Bear.w.me. What exactly MEP stands for? How does 'killing 2 birds with 1 stone' apply here?

                  Dear all,

I am not sure if I have miss it somewhere so if anyone knows the link, it would be great if you can forward to me. Greatly appreciate it. Just wondering, for CCA in IP schools, is it necessary to get a A1? Afterall, they do not need to have more points to get a place in JC, hence, can I say that the kids do not need to be so actively involved in CCAs? Given the fact that many DSA kids have already got their CCA secured, there are not many choices left for the rest of the kids and with timing clashes etc, even fewer options are available. It is more like joining a CCA for the sake of joining then taking it up for interest.

And how does CCA help in getting a place in University? Again minus some points here and there and perhaps helpful to application of scholarship? It will be great if someone can share some light, no need to go into details unless you have the time to do so…

thank you very much in advance.

MEP stands for music elective programme. I think about 7 secondary schools are offering it in-house. FOr other schools which offer MEP option, their students need to travel to these 7 schools to take the course.

You can read more about it in MEP thread in Secondary Support forum.

What I mean by killing two birds with one stone is MEP student has already know one musical instrument (usually piano or violin), so if you join band or string orchestra (western or chinese) you can pick up second instrument (compulsory for MEP unless you offer voice or music theory) in the process, therefore killing two birds with one stone. Also, you will spend CCA time practising the instrument as well.

                      Hope it is clear.

(P/S: by the way CCA points and choices are major concerns for parents whose children are in 'O' Level track attending school without any affiliation to any JC, you want the child to have better chance to get into more reputable JC; for IPs and Special schools like SOTA, NUSH, School of S&T their students are less pressured to gain points from CCA only to meet the compulsory requirement for holistic education so to speak)

Huh? you can do the same ma.... then you can concentrate on MEP. Teenagers are quite different from children, I think. If she finds no interest, then she might not look forward to CCA. If she switches midway, I'm not sure if that is good for points... I feel that teenagers have so much to handle already, I really want my kids to have fun and enjoy what they are doing. But that's just me. I learnt that after a few mistakes.
