Homeschool PSLE different from National PSLE?

Some other reasons to add on the KS2me:
1. What if the kid has special needs and the local schools have problem handling him?

2. What if the kid has other talents and need to spend more time in activities (I know of a case where a boy really good at chess) and spend time traveling overseas for competitions? The school system just cannot help him.

3. What if the kid has behaviorial or social problems the school cannot handle due to the large student-teacher ratio?

But I learn something through the forummers here. You can always appeal! How can I forget that!

Can homeschoolers apply for DSA? Then the aplication will be at the schools' discretion without having to wait for psle results

You can try applying for DSA but some schools will tell you outright that they do not accept homeschoolers as DSA applicants. My friend who's homeschooling her son found this out when she tried applying for DSA.

personally, i think this group is very very small; unlike overseas where quality education sometimes is too far away from place of residence, in SG, we have cheap and good primary schools a stone's throw away if you are living in HDB dwellings. families worrying about bread and butter issues would probably not have homeschooling on their list of needs. unless they have exceptionally bright and motivated kids, homeschool (by choice) parents usually do not belong to the 'lower-income' group (my apologies for stereotyping, cos somehow, my impression is that lower income group people usually are grateful to have a place in any school for their kids to get an education). correct me if you know of any exceptions.

I don't know the sample size of such families for a fact but I know a family with 6 children struggling with all these logistics, especially when kids are young so homeschool become an option.

hm....not sure about this, but if parents are stringent about religious aspect, they may probably go for religious school for secondary school also instead of those highly sought after 25x COP school. if the 25x COP school's religious teachings coincide with they homeschooler's philosophy, then all the more they have chance for appeal.

Just as there were no suitable primary schools for religious purpose, there might not be suitable secondary schools the same but sometimes people opt back to MOE school at secondary because they cannot handle the secondary curriculum for homeschooling.

I suppose as MOE, homeschooling would not auger well since it is directly against the mass education model. However, my simple thought is that once you approve them to do so under the special conditions, as these conditions are already special and validated by MOE, then all other things should be equally offered to them. Unless MOE feels that its approving criteria for homeschooling is not stringent enough, then they need further deterant to discourage it. I suppose there is another risk MOE needs to mitigate... what if what if, we have a top PSLE student from homeschooling scheme??? :faint: for MOE, it will open up a pandora box. :lol:

For whatever reasons parents decided to homeschool their kids (be it learning difficulties or giftedness), I feel that MOE should be gracious enough to welcome them back to mainstream schools (should they decided to opt in again). Furthermore, these homeschooling parents put in greater effort to homeschool their kids, no?


After all, there's no such discrimination for GCE 'O' levels or 'A' levels. Students can take same exam in schools or as private candidates. Similarly, these homeschooled kids sat for the exact same PSLE papers. Why the discrimination?

I suppose our leaders face the challenge of balancing compassion for minority with mass needs. Not easy la....otherwise why so many of them have GRAY hair so quickly.... or were they appointed at the age when the graying process was becoming exponential? :lol:

I guess National Education is a very important agenda, but I'm no politician, I cannot second guess why.


For sure, homeschooling is strongly discouraged by MOE and the government. Perhaps there's a way around it.

1. Register in a school anyway at P1.
2. Then ask for leave of absence (find some valid reasons)
3. Go missing for that 6 years.
4. Register for PSLE through the school you registered in...

Works or not ha? Never tried that, but sounds like can have the best of both worlds.

Also, I've done some research on homeschooling some 8 years back. These students perform much better in the university and more independent learners compared to traditional schooled children. In the US, top schools like Stanford does give a lot of preference to homeschooled kids. In fact, the acceptance rate is higher than regular schooled children. (# of acceptance vs # applicants)...

Homeschooled children can be our leaders also. Why would the government want to treat them differently? :?

homeschoolers already have this advantage, so does it matter which sec sch they go to? so leave the much-sought-after-school-vacancies to mainstream students (children of commoners like us), k?
