Choosing and Evaluating Primary Schools

This is what she told me. Anyway, she has already sending her sons to learning lab and other enrichment classes since k2 .
Another friend - her son was from the non- Gep top class of Roysth. His PSLE score was only 232. Her older brother also from Roysth scored only 216. So there is no guarantee that the child going to a good school will have a good PSLE result .
Of course, if there is choice , then go for a good school if the school is within acceptable distance. if cant get in to a good school. It is also fine. All schools are good schools . More importantly, is to prepare the child to be ready for the primary school life , not just academically but also socially .
The best school is the one near to your house.
We have given up phase 1 for Henry park, but registered DD with neighbor school which > 5 mins walking distance from home .
i believe the most important is still the home support & parent involvments to work together with the teachers . -

Since you are less than 1 km away from Radin Mas Pri, you will have a chance to participate in the balloting during P2C. However, it is better for you to have another backup school in mind (such as Cantonment Pri) just in case you are unsuccessful in the ballot.Hi ,I just joined this group and found this website very informative.

Agree, unfortunately for me Henry Park is my local school. But we are not citizens so my daughter instead of being walking distance from a school will end up who knows where.magiccastle:

Same here, gave up phase 1 for Henry park for a neighbourhood school (less stressful), but both schools are equal distance to home. Your DD are twins?magiccastle:

i gave up phase 1 for my daughter…though she is in another school which is not nearby (under phase 2A2), i have no regrets.

Hello all,
Very interesting and informative thread so far!
I am a Chinese American/Singaporean PR who is committed to putting my kids through local schools which I generally think are of very good standards.
I am 1-2km from Nanyang, New Town and Queenstown. I will not even attempt Nanyang from what I hear :-o. What are opinions about the other 2 please? I was also looking at River Valley due to its good reputation for Chinese Mother Tongue (I speak to my kids only in Mandarin) but heard it will be tough to get in. Finally I have spoken to/visited Bukit Timah which had a lovely principal but is further away.
So my question, since I can only register at Phase 2C is this. Do I bother registering for River Valley, knowing I probably won’t get in, but putting myself on the waitlist right away, then trying another school at 2CS?
Of the other 3 schools, which would you go for if you were me?
I also heard about Cantonment PS, any thoughts on that one?
Thanks so much in advance for your help! -

You shouldn't waste your P2C chance. If you know that you will not get a place in RVPS, you should just go ahead and apply with another school in this phase. Get a confirmed place for your child first. After the whole P1 registration is over, if you are still keen in RVPS, place your child in the waiting list....I was also looking at River Valley due to its good reputation for Chinese Mother Tongue (I speak to my kids only in Mandarin) but heard it will be tough to get in...

Thanks Class Monitor. That was what I was guessing should be my tactic.
Any advice/opinion amongst New Town, Queenstown, Cantonment, Bukit Timah PS? -
New Town seems to have great facilities from the brochure dd brought home from kindy.
