2010 P1 Registration Exercise for 2011 In-Take
-
In fact my son has just started his primary school education 3 days ago, in a school of our choice. God bless.
However, that was a long, exciting and extremely stressful journey for us. My son was being balloted out during Phase 2C. There was no prep prior to the registration in Aug 09 as we were too late for any PV or GRO (when we realise it in May/June 09). After the balloting exercise, I’ve expended all my revenues in trying to get my son into the school of our choice … and god bless, we managed to secure a place by Nov 09.
It is not about money, it is about your preseverance, determination and patient.
Anyway, in the entire journey of P1-2009 registation exercise, I’m grateful to Kiasuparent website for all the very detailed and up-to-date info and the proactive of the forumers, who willing to share their experiences with others. I’ve learnt alot here and I hope for those parents who just join in to seek for advice and info, you should participate actively in this forum to unfold your doubts. -

Which school is your son in and how is he coping? -
Thanks Kiasimom.
My boy is doing ok. In fact he has been given a spelling list yesterday for the whole of term 1. He is learning fine and coping ok even with the spelling. I think the enrichment class we have put him through last year (during his K2), helps him to learn and acquire new things faster. -
properties within 1 km of popular school are extremely hot in demand every Jan - June period, regardless of recession or not
it is not just in singapore, but in every major city around the world
at least in singapore, the system is ultra transpaprent and if you are kiasu and put in the planning and hard work for few YEARS, you are quite sure to get the reward
so in singapore u do not need to be rich to get a leg up into those popular schools. be kiasu, but don’t be blurr!
in many cities, money talks and money walks -

I read in the papers that SC takes up about 95% of the total cohort that applies for P1. If that is the case, then doubling the chances of balloting for SC may not have any real impact, cos it means that the probability of being chosen is just increased slightly considering that SC forms the majority.
That's right. So, in fact, although each Singapoeran is given an extra balloting chance, his chance only increases by maximum of 16.67%.BigDevil:
Before the change, SC has 1/2 chance (so does the PR).
After the change, SC will increase to 2/3 chance of getting picked.
If SC's chance were \"doubled\", then he would be 100%.
eg.
9 SC and 1 non-SC: 90% chance
Doubling the chances for SC, ie. 18 for SC and 1 non-SC: 94% chance -

That is very true. In fact, to take advantage of the new ruling, one should target schools with the MOST PRs vying for places in the schoolI read in the papers that SC takes up about 95% of the total cohort that applies for P1. The doubling of chances is at the balloting stage. If balloting takes place at Phase 2C, assuming 50 places left with 60 applicants (50 SC and 10 non-SC). What they do at balloting is drawing from the box / bowl the slips with applicant's names till all the 50 places are filled up. Doubling means your child names will be on 2 identical slips, i.e. in the balloting box, they will be 110 slips of names, 2x50 for SC and 1x10 for non-SC. That way, SC's chances are really doubled.

Not meaningful to measure % of success as it depends on how many non-SC are among the applicants. Even if there is no non-SC applying, there is no 100% success for everyone....unless MOE create a new Phase 2D for non-SC.
If there is no balloting required, no inequality to begin with, as every registrant is given a place in the school.
Most schools' balloting takes place from Phase 2C onward
Assuming worst case basis, more PV (Phase 2B) than 50% of vacnacies left after Phase 2A2 - it still goes by distance of PV first. These days most schools manage the number of PV very well, not many cases of having to ballot the PV. Schools will send out survey forms to existing pupils to find out future intake of siblings for the following year, have an estimate of alumni's first child etc....and usually allow PV if they stay nearby, in very unlikely case of unsuccessful balloting, they can still be prioritised at Phase 2C. Key is : stay near the school
Many parents mistakenly think that planning for school is just 1, 2 or 3 years ahead, but no ! It takes at least 5 years to strategise and do some planning in housing location as well.
Most PRs are aiming at well-known schools in the heartland, eg Rulang, West View......but the competition for places at these schools are temperary. When they do well in P2 or P3 or get into GEP = they will transfer to the branded schools. Seen it. -
