Yellow corporate T-shirt is only to be worn on special occasions - maybe first Friday of the month (can't remember exactly) and on overseas trips etc

Lots of T-shirts to buy - but love the material and design...

There's no need to wear PE attire underneath the uniform - can change in school.

And wearing the tie is compulsory during school hours.

Some boys even play soccer wearing the tie.. 😄
      bibi&baba got sell the tee?

        Mandarin:
Hi, my son is in Year 2 this year. He is taking Canoeing as his CCA, perhaps I can shed a little light so that you can make a informed decision.

The CCA started with 3 times a week from 3pm to 6pm. It was extended to Sat morning from 7am to 10am from April/May last year onwards. So, it is a total of 4 sessions per week. with his UYO on every Friday, I am seeing him home early only once a week. Effectively, his hours out in school is as long as any working person. The same commitment of 4 times weekly is expected throughout June and Nov/Dec holiday with 2 weeks break towards the year-end. I understand that some sports are considered core sports (ie school expects medal in inter-school) and these CCAs require greater time commitments. Having said that, my son is very motivated to go for every session, despite the aches and blisters that he gets. I think the coaches/teachers are doing something right. He has also grown to be much more athletic in this last 1 year.

If your son is taking 3rd language, RSP or MEP, i strongly suggest that you consider sports CCA carefully. There may not be enough time for all these activities.
Ds1's in canoeing and in year 2 this year as well, in addition to Philharmonic Orchestra and NCC(Sea). He's got CCA every day of the week but he loves them all and won't drop anything. He's back late everyday around 6.30-7 so you need to be very disciplined. He's a lot more buff than last year :-), and is also very motivated to go for canoeing in spite of blisters, aches and scrapes:-) Know that canoeing practice is at MacRitchie Reservoir except for one session in the gym in school per week. It includes dragon boating too with practices at Kallang. He's also been to Bedok reservoir and loves it there. THe school is very strong in canoeing and dragon boating and i believe they made a pretty clean sweep of the medals last year.

          Mandarin, Chiranner,

Thank you for your feedback on CCA schedules.

I wonder how do the boys cope? Does the IB track means lots of homework, projects, assignments? If they reach home only at dinner time and have loads of work, presumably tired out physically, do they still have time for work and study?

What time do your boys turn out for the day? Do they get at least 8 hours of sleep?

Also, I am wondering how flexible the school is with CCAs. Do they let you switch CCAs? For example, a boy be selected for say basketball, but want to get into air rifle. Can he try out basketball for a month, then later decide he really doesn’t like it (or vice versa), and would like to switch to the other, or even switch to say Philharmonic Orchestra… can he do it?

Six years is a long time, they should be able to try out various sports/clubs?

Thanks a mil. DS can’t quite decide! He was shortlisted for many of the sports but on the final day was asked to go for two, and going for one meant he didn’t make it for the other. It also clashed with water polo so he missed that, plus most part of the UYO ‘bazaar’.

I have the same concerns. Do the kids have a choice to change the CCA if after trying it out for some time they dont seem to like it or find it too hectic ? My DS was saying they were told that it is not advisable to switch CCAs, especially if u take a sport - is that true ??

When shlould they submit their choices ? How about UYOs - thats a longgg list to choose from - spoilt for choices huhh. Really problem of plenty 😞 🙏

The mode of assessment for the IB consists of tests in the 1st term/semester and coursework for the 2nd. My son was very tired by the time he got back from school n would often fall asleep reading the newspapers on the sofa. He doesn’t always get 8 hours’ sleep as he’s the sort who wants to get things done so I hear him practising his cello at 11 sometimes. There are days when he falls asleep at 8.30 and sleeps through the night through sheer exhaustion. I don’t know if he manages to complete all his work on those few occasions.

Although there’s a lot of work, the deadlines are usually made known way in advance so there’s definitely time to complete the work if the child is disciplined and keeps track of the various deadlines and is able to prioritize. I see my so doing lots of projects at one time but they’re not due till some time later. It’s important to keep track so you don’t end up rushing to meet too many deadlines at the same time.

I was initially concerned that he might have bitten off more than he could chew but he didn’t want to drop any of his ccas n I thought it would be a shame not to pursue them since he was so keen on them. Also, I thought he would be forced to be disciplined since he had little time to waste.

Anyhow, he did pretty well, picking up several sports and academic trophies last year in his level in spite of the ccas and class and cca leadership positions so I couldn’t say that he wasn’t able to cope and hence had to respect his choices. He did assure me he was coping fine.

It is pretty pressurizing in the IB track with threats of being dropped from the program if certain minimum standards are not met.

As for switching of ccas, I’m really not sure cos my son hasn’t tried switching. For UYOs you pick a few and then get allocated one. I’m not sure if you can request for a change in UYO.

                Good luck!

Though my son comes home on most days around 6-7pm, he manages to finish his homework within 1 hour. Projects/assignments are often given in advance, so he could work on them during the weekends. He goes to bed on most days around 10pm.

Forgot to mention that the CCA will stop a few weeks before mid year and end of year exams, so there will be time for revision.

I heard from my son that there were one or two boys who have switched CCA last year. The boy would have to ‘gain admission’ into the new CCA before he could drop the old one. Not sure about switching UYO, haven’t heard of that.

I understand that parents are now concerned with the selection of CCA, how hectic is the training schedule and whether their sons are able to find time to do their homework etc.

To add to that list, I understand that the 1st term test for Year 1 has been scheduled between 1st-26th Feb.
I’m trying to find some assesment books/testpapers for my son.
Is there any difference in exam papers(for common subjects like Maths, geography etc)between IP and Express classes.
Any parent here can shed some light?

                    thanks.

                      Mandarin and chirunner,

Thanks for your wonderful insights into the lives of ur DSs. I am really impressed by ur DS diligence and maturity. Hats off to bringing them up so well :ugogirl: . The schools seems to be doing a great job in making sure the children are well rounded and grow up to be true gentlemen.

I do agree that the boys are given enough time to submit their HW and so if the kids learn to be organised, they will find time for whatever they want.

Err...I'm not very sure. I have not been to bibi & baba myself. Sorry... I am a rather hands-off mum. I also saw the yellow t in the laundry basket. He must have bought it from school.

You can call bibi and baba to find out. 😄
