My ds in the ip portion... All very young and not at all result-oriented. In fact the academic environment is quite laid back.... Different story when it comes to cca... Very on-the-ball and result-focused....

tks for your reply Dreamgear. Both Pri & sec schools have same principal right? I thought they will have the same type of ‘culture’?

But different syllabus. I suppose if there is a major exam target in place like psle, then the school will have to be very focus in that.... Thats what they excel in. In ip there no major exam target in place, therefore the school will have more leeway .

Hi sparks.. Can you please elaborate on what type of 'culture' are you referring to ?

In lower primary, teachers tend to be more nurturing and less result-oriented coz the kids are small. As the kids move on to upper primary, teachers tend (and need) to be more result-oriented. Frankly, I would be worried if they are not. However, the teachers are no less caring & encouraging.

In fact, I find the 'culture' in CHS much less competitive than in many other schools. My neighbor's kid who is from a neighborhood school (also in P5) has so many supplementary & remedial classes to attend everyday. DS2, on the other hand, can still play soccer after school everyday :faint: .. DS2 also does not have much homework, so he is always feeling so relaxed at home everyday, which kinda makes me a little worried, actually.. 😂

Hi firefly38, not for ds' case, sadly.

since the start of P5 (same teachers for P5 & P6), ds has shared with me many times how he dislikes his EL & CL teachers as they are constantly scolding the class, forfeiting recess time & giving out ridiculous punishments like copying passages. The overemphasis on punishments may have killed any remaining interest in the subject. I know my ds, he could do much better with encouraging & patient teachers. However, under his current ones, he has to find ways to 'siam' as much scolding & punishments as he can. I feel sorry for him as school is supposed to be a fun & enjoyable experience.

Ds enjoys PE lessons very much & since start of P6, PE lessons have been cut from twice to only once a week. Even so, when it comes to his fav PE lessons on Tues, they hardly play for 15 min & lesson is over. 🤷

I do recognise that CHS has their own method of churning out good results - teaching methods & materials. Based on ds' current pri school experience, ds & I are wondering if CHS secondary sch is going to be a good choice. It is a convenient one as we live nearby & there's affiliation. Even though CHS may be a top school, I have no qualms about ds going to a less popular secondary school with more passionate, caring & inspiring teachers. That's why I would greatly appreciate any feedback about their secondary teachers.

                      Hi sparks..

Sorry to hear about your DS' unpleasant experience.. My DS' experience at CHSP for the past 2+ years has been quite pleasant (he was transferred to CHSP at P3, he is now in P5).. Not sure if its becoz DS is not in the top class, hence less stressful.. In fact, DS has already made up his mind to join CHSS after his PSLE next year (provided he CAN make it, I always tell him)..

I do have friends whose kids are currently in CHSS Sec-2 (O-Level track).. They are my DS1's ex-classmates at CHSP.. Though my DS1 is not in CHSS, he still meets up with his old friends regularly, sometimes at my place, which is quite near CHS..

Whenever I see the boys, I always ask them how they are doing at CHSS (trying to gather more info for DS2 mah). The boys say they really enjoy going to school and they like the Sec Sch teachers more than the Pri Sch teachers, coz they are more caring & less naggy :faint: .. I tell the boys the teachers are less naggy coz they are big boys now..

So, your DS is taking PSLE this year? All The Best to him! Whichever Sec Sch he finally chooses to go, hope he will have an enjoyable & fulfilling learning journey there.. 😄

Tks for your kind words. Yes, I must emphasize that ds experience may be subjective & maybe just his luck! I'm glad that your boy has enjoyed his schooltime. 😄

Yes my boy is taking PSLE this year. Thanks for your positive reply abt the sec school. A relief to know that!
