Comparing Pre-school English Reading and Phonics Enrichment

Hi all,


I have been using the Peter and Jane series and basic phonics to teach my son, now 5 years old, since he was 3. He can read the simple sentences, but now that we are at more advanced books, and he always stumbles with more complex words.

I heard that phonics can help, but I am not very experienced with, so have been trying to find out more about it. It seems that Mrs Sam's phonics is patented, has anyone tried it?

I am comparing between Morris allen, Lcentral ICR and Mrs Sam's since I am at serangoon area.

hi, after compare ,which centre is more suitable for your son?have you done the assessment at the centre? my son also yrs old, he know letter sound A to Z and only can read few very simple word. I am looking for the class that can help to improve his reading .

Hi just to share .

I applied Mrs Sam’s phonic method (i learned when i enrolled my elder boy there)to teach my 2 younger kids at home without going for any phonic enrichment class.
They picked up phonic within a few months. My girl become an avid reader who is able to read beyond her age at p1. She has finished the Roa Dahl series at k2 . She My boy is slower yet reading is not a issue and can spell unseen word easily . Eg ‘incomprehensible’, investment , community etc. School spelling is too easy for him. He don’t even need to learn .

I m not sure about the other service providers, but I enrolled my boy there as Mrs Sam garanteed result . When my boy enrolled there at K2 , he was not able to read well n had mirror image when writing out A-Z. It was tough initially .But within 6 -9 months, he was able to pronounce n spell words better than me . He requested me to buy Enid Blyton books for him to read . My hubby n I were very pleased at the result though it was a lot of hard work .

Hi.Thanks a lot for your sharing.. so glad to hear that. I visited the centre and bring my son for assesement. His case is quite simliar with your son. Teacher suggest start fm express prep class to sharpen his handwriting skill.His handwriting very untidy &not in a line, and hv mirror image for certain word. Then go for sight reading before proceed to phonics. Your son start from which level?
Actually after visited ,I found that not many student and class compare to other centre such as ICR. Classroom and setup also looks quite old. And Course fee also quite expensive. So I am wondering dun know wanna sign up or not.

Now , is mrs Sam still teaching ? From the website , it seems to be other teachers teaching ? During that time , the students can be as many as more than 15 . There was even a p5 student that enrolled in the program.
Now , max is 8 . I thought it is even better . Is it a lump sum committment or pay by term basis? result guranteed?
Personally , I benefited too . I learned n used it to teach my younger kids.My younger boy’s classmates who went to ICR and MA still cannot read or spell the longer words as compared to my boy who is self taught by mummy at home.
If your kid is already k2 , then enroll the phonic programme. Hand writing n sight word reading can teach at home . Use the ladybird series.

Ya, saw the previous posting . Your boy is k1 . If you can , self teach the sight words n improve the hand writing first . The motor skill at k1 on the hand co-ordination is still developing . Still have time.

Thanks for your advice. But now is already end of K1 ( only left 1 mth plus). Just worry he will left behind. I should start teaching him Peter and Jane books early this year.

Mrs Sam no longer teaching. The prep, sight reading & phonics teach by different teacher trained by Mrs Sam. There is 3 full time teacher. Teacher Mel teach phonics, she is senior. Student not many, max 8 but currently should be around 4 student per class. May be the number of student drop after Mrs Sam not teach. BTW, how old is your elder son now? It is lump sum commitment but can break into 4 payment .I not asking the result guaranteed or not.. may be can ask Plus if no result can hv money back refund.. BTW,how many lesson your son attend last time to see the result & how much per lesson ? now is ard $50+ for a lesson for 2 hrs

I have tried one term of ICR Little Bears Club and I find that it is not useful. They don't teach phonics at this level. I am also still searching around. How old is your son?
