CHIJ Our Lady Queen of Peace
-
Hi, I’m new here. My DD is in P2.
So far, I’m happy with the school. But I’m frustrated with their school bus company. Unlike my 2 boys who have had the same bus driver for the last 6 years, my girl seem to have changed buses and changed bus drivers umpteen times.
Anyone else experiencing the same, or is it just me? -
Hi all. I am an alumni of IJ OLQP, and I’m glad to say that I really enjoyed my time there.
I was from 6 Peace 2009. Peace was the best class back then, as there was no Hope class for P6.
You might think that the school does not perform as well academically as other schools, but I feel that academics should not be the focus of the school. Rather, it should be morals and character education. I’m very proud of my school for this as I feel that our school teachers are all very caring and treat all students nicely and equally; something which is hard to find. Our students are all very courteous and sweet, a result of the cosy environment in OLQP. You will always feel at home there, and your classmates are very caring.
We are very helpful, and we take initiative to serve the school. I was a prefect of the school and I feel that the school has really helped me to nurture into a confident young lady.
Our former principal Ms Cecilia Lim was like a motherly figure to us even though she seemed strict, she was always very supportive of us. I really miss her now.
I loved my form teacher, she has taught us for 3 years and I can tell that she is very concerned about her students, always asking about us. I feel that she understands us very well.
I really love the school’s CCA as everybody in the CCA is very bonded and we look out for each other. I was the President of Choir last year. The seniors are always guiding the juniors, treating them as younger sisters. I really enjoyed my 5 years in Choir and wish I had the opportunity to join the Choir in P1, which was only allowed recently.
Anyway, some other information about the school is that the girls are eloquent and well-versed in the English Language and are very sociable girls. They are usually friendly and polite, very nice to talk to.
You will definitely have fun in this school, as not much pressure is put on you to do well.
Overall, I feel that this school is the right school for you if you are looking for a school that not only trains you academically but in morals and courtesy. You will not regret sending your child to this school.
Anyway, I’m very grateful to this school for my many achievements during my time there, giving me many opportunities to excel.
I thank all my teachers for helping my perform better than I expected for PSLE, 265. I am now attending Cedar Girls’ Secondary School.
I will forever be a proud OLQPian.
Thank you everyone for reading my post and have a nice day. ^_^ -
kayumihirai, thanks for the sharing.
I am an alumni of IJ OLQP too, except I graduated in 1987 and the sch was called IJ Bt Timah then.
During my time, we only had 3 classes per level, it was like u mentioned, v cosy and almost had a kampung feel.
I enjoyed my years in IJ too and I liked the holistic education I received there, which is the main reason why I chose to put my girl there as well.
However, I can feel a slight shift of focus in the sch's objectives. I am still recovering from shock that the girls have to stay back 2 days for supplementary on top of their regular CCAs every week. It seems to me that the school is trying hard to push the girls to achieve much better in the academics. I am not against it but I just hope that the other focus like character, leadership and moral development will still be as relevant and strong.
I always feel that IJ has a very rich and unique culture compared to other girls' schs. It has a very balance holistic education which focus on character development and community work on top of a decent academic achievement. I just hope the IJ sisters will remember not lose this unique culture in pursuit for academic excellence.

I missed the old school campus, small but cosy. The school building is now huge, and provides a lot of facilities for the students, but I didn't like the fact that I had to climb all the way up 7 storeys everyday. It was tough, indeed.
The current school name is too long, and a mouthful in fact, in my opinion.
I prefer to say \"CHIJ Bukit Timah\" when asked. I sometimes still get mixed up. ^^
Oh, and I have to add something about the supplementary lessons. It is not exactly tough at all, more like an enrichment program, as what was taught during supplementary lessons by my teacher was usually very fun. We occasionally had special activities (especially for math) and one I had a very fond memory of was the Apple Tower activity, where we worked in groups to build a tower with straws which could balance an apple on the top. The tallest tower which could balance an apple would win.
I had a lot of fun throughout the whole activity and we cracked our heads to find a way to build the best structure and foundation. We used a lot of tape in the end, and our group won haha. It was a really weird looking tower but strong (because of tape).
Another activity was the Egg Drop where each group would try to use different materials to support the egg when dropped from the 7th storey and the group whose egg did not crack would get a prize.
I remembered all sorts of funny things the groups used, one even used floats =D
We used balloons and our form teacher thought it was not going to work but it did and it looked beautiful spiralling down (a very pretty sight) and our egg didn't crack (miraculously).
I don't know if such fun activities could take place again but I really hope so. The supplementary lessons are extremely exciting and fun, and usually encourage teamwork. However, during P6 it wouldn't be, because of PSLE. So don't worry about the supplementary lessons, they would be a very good chance to bond with friends and have fun.
Also, I stayed behind for supplementary lessons on 2 days (Mon and Wed), then CCA (Choir) on Thu and Tue during competition period. I stayed behind practically everyday but I feel that it is quite good as it will get your daughter adjusted to the hectic secondary school schedule.
I still can't get used to waking up at 6 am every morning. I live in Chestnut, which is very near to the school so I had to wake up only at 7 then...
Haha, primary school would be the most relaxing and fun 6 years of your life after all, so we should cherish those six years. ^_^ -

May I ask why did you choose to study in Cedar Girls? Initially I thought u live near there but isn't Chestnut very far from Cedar?\"

With 265, u cld apply for most respectable girls' sch like Nanyang Girls or even RGS (both are nearer than Cedar right?)
Just curious, what do you or ur frens look for when choosing a sec sch? -
Hmmm, a question I am always asked.
I am looking for a school which I can have fun in, like IJ. I don't really like the competitive environment in schools, and I really like the Cedar spirit. Anyway, I don't think I'm very studious, I did not study hard for PSLE, just pay attention when the teacher is teaching in class and, not wait until it's revision time (a real waste of time, why not spend that time on something else?). Personally I do not like revision, I prefer learning new things. I did very well when I was in P1 (got 288), but I don't actually excel in my school exams after P4 when everybody else starts catching up and the subjects introduced are less.
I really expected to get a score of like 250, I'm extremely puzzled.
I don't think I will fit into RGS or NYGH, unfortunately. I'm far too relaxed. XD
I think the reason why I got a high PSLE score is because of my math score, I was able to solve all the 'killer' questions except for one. I guess my English standard is also better.
Anyway, a word of advice from me to all parents is that you shouldn't give your too much pressure to excel, I'll just kill off all their interest in the subject. Sometimes relaxing would do you some good. (But don't relax as much as I did, you may regret it haha.)
But so far I am enjoying myself, I still feel very strong competition. I feel very worried that I might not get the same or better percentile than I did in IJ OLQP...
But I'll try my best anyway. ^_^ -
munchkin:
Hi my daughter just started P1 on monday and today her chinese teacher threw a book at her desk for not listening in her class! Its absolutely appalling that such things can happen and so soon
Oh I think I might know this teacher. She has taught me before and was very nice to me and likes to tell interesting stories. She is a pretty good teacher but she has low tolerance for lousy work attitudes. I remember her throwing/slamming a girl's ex. book on the floor (but the girl did something very wrong, can't really remember what though).
She's extremely scary when she's angry, but I can assure you, she's a good teacher; very friendly and good to talk to. But you'll have to behave well or a volcano will erupt. :x -
Hello Lock,
Howz the past 2 months for your dd? I do feel that there is still a lot of homework to be done every week. Basically, every week is very packed plus a couple of days of staying back.
Now, they have to study 4 subjects so it is beginning to be very tough for the girls plus the fact that they really have to study extra for the Science because textbook notes seems to be not enough to prepare them for the CA1.
My friend’s dd in Nanhua does not have CA1, how I envy her… -
Yah. Homework has increased. My girl struggles with Chinese this yr. The teacher teaches very fast, 1 wk 1 chapt. More words to learn. Spelling also becomes more difficult.
As for science, so far she is quite ok with the subject. Maybe this is due to her teacher giving them quite a fair bit of worksheets to do.
She is staying back 4x a wk. But this wk, i have decided to pull her out of the Chinese supp on Wed cos she said the class is super noisy, like the kids are having a party. The teacher who teaches supplementary is not their own Chinese teacher. She said that she did not learn anything during supp. I would rather she comes home early to rest than to waste her time in sch not learning anything.
How's the workload like in Peace? I heard Ms Phang is a good teacher.
