I honestly think it's ok to do some work. Think the child would know for himself/herself when to stop. If it's done out of interest, why stop? Mmm... Don't
at me hoh. But that's what I used to do in my school holidays. I'd take an older sibling textbook, self-studied then did the sums in the text. Assessment books were not in vogue then. I did play, watch lots of cartoon, do crafts, play badminton and music etc. It was all self-directed and my parents didn't tell me to do any work. Neither did they stop me.
True that times have changed. I encourage my children to read widely too. However if they pick up a text and start working on it, I'd be very happy to leave them alone. Just me... -

If you make it a rule that he does not cook without an adult in the house, will he disobey? -

I was just comparing notes with my husband, and we realised that we were fairly opposite in what we used to do with new schoolbooks. He would read all the Maths and some science, while I would read the Lit/Hist/Geog/English. My Maths and Science books would be pristine and untouched on the first day of school! Yes, I agree it's a matter of degree, although I would be concerned if my kids didn't do a lot more of fun stuff than just prepare for the new school year. My main concern would be if my kids were the type to cause disruptions due to boredom during classes, or switch off because they thought they already knew it all and miss some of the teacher's tips.
