The total is $300. Singaporean will pay $100 in cash and $200 will be funded by edusave. Programmes will be band together with the lesson conducted in class.

Yr neighbour may have got the wrong msg that this $$ collected is for additional enrichment class like tuition.
There is additional enrichment class like the Hanyu pingyin and is conducted by a 3rd party...this is optional and is conduct outside school hours.
Anyway, schools can tap on edsave funds to provides students with enrichment programmes or to purchase additional resources. Hence I believe all schools will also tap on this fund & not only CHS.
As for CCA, its fair for everyone to contribute so that the sch can engage professional instructors to train our boys. In SG, schools r all fighting for awards...just see all those banners display outside every sch. P1 boys are not require to take up CCA but if yr neighbour felt the pinch of paying then she should let her son partcipate.
I felt there's really no cause of being helpless & lost as all sch in SG is the same & wat u do expected from a SAP sch anyway...other than its bcos she's a PR hence she did not enjoy the privileges & subsidies as us.
I would advice yr neighbour to address her questions & doubts to the sch.
Dreammom,

tks for your clarification. My neighbr is aware that the nrichment cls are being banded with the normal lesson, its just that she find it redundant since her son is having pte tuition. She claim their school teachers v free. Another thing is HCL which provides the chinese nrichmt is being owned by ex-chs teacher, she feel abit....unethical. She also feel e canteen food are more ex. Overall kinda of not an ideal sch for her, only the distance is a plus point since she staying next block to the sch.

After gathering info from other mums with kids in other top and neighbrhd schs, she then realised the difference - lies in the $ spent.

Btw, im juz curious, are the nrichment classes on going for the whole year? So izit still neccessary for them to go tuition? For eng, chs is also doing stellar right, does the P1 need to purchase other books eg grammar handbook? R the p1 having any SAs or CAs tis year?

She claim their school teachers v free ya. Another thing is HCL which provides the chinese nrichmt is being owned by ex-chs teacher, she feel abit....unethical. I do understand where she is coming from...but from some of the boys whose not attending pte tuition, like my DS, we do not feel it that way & do not mind paying a little more like less than $10 a mth. Anyway i dun see this $$ as paying for tution instead we think its for the enhancement in terms of resources to enrich their lesson. As for the Chn enrichment, there r alot of pte centers & tutors out there which also claimed that they r formally from elite schs too, hence it dun comes as a surprise for me. Nowsaday parents do voice their opinions & views openly so if the lesson r not conduct properly, the sch will have to address the complains & act on it...anyway its optional. As for canteen food...my aunt is mending a stall in Roseyth Pri...trust me $$ is not a lot difference.
I would advice yr neighbour to think seriously if CHS is the right sch for his DS, the sch culture & practise will not change & she will face more problem later in trying to adapt & accept. If she is not comfortable with the sch then her DS will also be affected and shared the same views too.
This is not good for her DS.
Not to mentioned that the school fee for PR is going to be adjusted soon.

I know some parents who lives as far as holland, bukit panjang & east coast...and they ferry their DSs back & fro daily. Distance is not really an issue where else whether is this the sch we want our DS to be in. Yes its really a waste if she give up the chance now but looking at the long term, she will be very stressful trying to cope. I dun think its wise just to pull thr this way.

Its a pity she din do her homework iya ie. find out more from other mums or the sch. She did mentioned last yr p1 din hv this nrichment cls during normal sch hrs. She thought sch reputation is gd and so near to her home but din expect all the extras. Anyway, when i bump into her she will update me. Hope she get used to CHS way of life.

I agree with pokemon..... It will not do good for her DS if the parent do not like the culture of the school. And will be stressful for her as well, and will be complaining thru out the 6 years and if can get to the Sec school, another 4 years of complain.

Hi NicHei 😉
Yes it's really not wise to carry with the sch if her neighbour is not comfortable with the sch practise & culture, it will be difficult for her to adapt and accept in the coming yrs. Her DS will also be affected by her negative pt of views & thus won't be able to bond with the school. That's not good for her DS 6yrs in CHS.

Hi pokeman
Most of the parents i know have done our research & wants our DS to be in CHS bcos of its culture & environment. Hence my apology if i sounded :x ...cos its rather annoying dat yr neighbour get into CHS & now complains of $$, tchers too free & etc. I have friends' DS who did not get in and r now still on waiting list...some r still waiting now even though their DS is now at Pri. 3.

Though sm parents may hv done research bt some fine details or new pgm introduce from sch may nt be known to them. Most parents assumed all govt pri sch system cannot differ so much. Tis is juz my opinion, im nt siding anyone.

Well, here are the obvious options for the neighbour,

1) Opt out of the extra lesson as it is not compulsary. It should be after school, quite surprise to hear is during school time. Between school time is 7:30am to 1:35pm.

2) Opt out of the canteen by not buying if the neighbour feels the food is expensive, pack some food for their own kids to bring to school.

3) Opt out of the school if the neighbour thinks that everything in CH is more expensive than other schools. There is a long Q outside the school door for those who wanted to opt in.

Between, I thought only Singaporean like me likes to complain, seems like PR nowadays loves to complain too.

If nothing goes wrong, there should be sessons, where Parents meet Teacher and Parents meet Principal. It will be good time to feedback. Or the neighbour can go to school and talk to Principal direct. but better start with teacher first. Even better, can drop an email to the Principal.

Good schools usually do not have much problem in getting good results as they have already a good system built, even that one year that they did not come top in Singapore, they are still a lot better than the rest. So a lot more effort are also put in to character building while the other school are playing catchup for results.

Believe it or not, its up to your neighbour. But I think speaking for myself, I will be a very different person today if I wasn’t there then.
