My parents already knew I am weak in MT, maybe they didn't know about the education assessment thing, not sure why my teachers didn't do anything, maybe because my teachers didn't realize I was really that bad. But strangely I managed to pass MT because I tikam tikam write down my answers for the 5 MCQ and I have no problem with listening in LC, Maybe those two are why I passed :siao:
How did you get as far as you have without teachers and parents taking some action? If you are bad as you say, ask your parents to get you an education assessment to see if you have a learning disability. Children with learning disabilities usually get exempted from MT as they are already burdened with coping with other subjects. -
dropping Chinese is not a play game is only considered when u have no choice but to do it take for example my pri 4 dd we went through alot of family discussion on this topic in the end we took up MOE recommendation we drop her Chinese and when we did drop her Chinese we finally see better results for her other subjects but bear in mind she has dyslexia.

It's a grey world out there. Know of a kid who's been taking higher Chinese then suddenly drop it at P6 citing learning disability backed by medical assessment. No time extension for other subjects, just drop Chinese only. There's been no accident of any sort that happened to that child. I try not to state the obvious here but my main point is whatever the course of action, pls be sure the motive is right.
Hi, my ds dropped his HMT at P6.
I felt the HMT workload was too heavy and wanted him to spend more time on the other subjects. At some point he was getting low 70s in his MT but more than 80 for HMT. It was very strange. I didn't need a medical assessment to do so as long as the letter is sent in before application for the PSLE exam.
Personally, I felt the amount of effort that was expended on P6 HMT was not worth the few bonus points. I thought it was wiser to spend more time on the 4 important subjects.
His best fren then also dropped HMT after his mum spoke to me. It was a real good move because my ds' MT results went up considerably and even his Maths and Science were going beyond the A* level. I guess the 2 extra days freed up from not havg to attend extra HMT supp class helped. He had more rest and study time
His fren is now in Hwa Chong. My ds and his fren are both taking HMT but at least they can just focus on one HMT exam now.
But I think it really depends on your child's ability and aptitude. My dd1 is doing well in her HMT and other core subjects so I did not consider dropping HMT for her. -

Perhaps I wasn't clear earlier. This child dropped Chinese altogether, both HCL and CL. If can qualify for HCL and cope up to end P5, I can't imagine there's learning issue. In fact, the child fared better in Chinese than DS. DS never gets beyond a pass for HCL. So this child took just 3 subjects for psle.
When DS told me, his eyes lit up. Right away, I told him no, don't think of bailing yourself out of Chinese. There will be more obstacles in life, face them head on. Buying your way out is not the way, I told him.
Of cos it's up to individual how they want to guide or protect the child, in this case psle score. For me, I won't want to teach my child to get around the system this way just for a higher Tscore. It just isn't right, at least to me.

I was speaking to my office colleague recently whole ds2 had Psle this year. She also mentioned that last year a classmate from her ds1 class dropped mother tongue just before Psle.
I asked her why? If the kid was so bad at Chinese?
She no, in fact the boy was one of the best in class and with just 3 subjects he went to score in high 26x for Psle… I was bit shocked that kids who are good at studies are dropping MT at Psle.
Wondering how MOE assesses each case for MT drop out at PSLE. I thought only language grasping and learning disability with a proper diagnosis report from doctor will make you eligible for dropping MT?
Strange what some kids do to get better marks these days…
We are non Chinese and my daughter taken it as MT. As a parent I try my best to support her to like and learn Chinese… I feel MT is important no matter which one the kid decide to pursue…
