Hi Mother777, would you share which uk medical schools your daughter has applied to? My gal is not successful for local schools but receives offer from the uk. not sure about letting her go all by herself. Still hope to reapply as the uk costs are really high. but your post on uk uni encourages us. Thank you!
      Good Day!
I will PM you with details of the medical school my daughter interviewed for.
So, if I understand correctly, your daughter already has an offer from UK med school? and it is recognized by SMC?

As far as I have heard, all UK med universities are GMC recognized and their course curriculum is standardized to meet the GMC requirement. But for Singaporeans who want to come back to practice, the choices are limited to UK universities recognized by SMC.

I live overseas, so my DD was not restricted by only going to SMC recognized colleges. The UK med school she got offer was recognized in the overseas country we live in.

UK has a large presence of Asians and the university I visited (2.5hrs train ride from London) had a very diverse cohort.
So, fear not, if your DD gets UK interview and offer thereafter - I suggest you give it a serious consideration. Please do consider the financial obligations are lot heftier than SG med school. We definitely would have had to take loans to fund her course fee and living expenses - but this was secondary to the passion our DD had to study medicine.

To me - it was like making a choice between - saving money now and give children an inheritance OR give them a career now so that they can earn their own by working in domain they love? The choice was clearly the later one.

I had actually paid the initial deposit bond to reserve the seat for my DD as she got UK offer before SG one. I do not regret losing the bond as it was our back-up plan. Going to UK, attending their interview and securing the offer was a morale booster for my DD. She came back so confident to attend the SG interviews.

I wish you and your DD - the best!!

      Hi Mother777

Thanks for the info, I’m sure your daughter will do fine. It’s like going overseas for her Uni except she’s back at her own country :). During holidays you can visit each other.

We were in similar situation (deciding to relocate whole family), I chose to continue my children’s education in sg, so I travel to/fro sg.
      Thanks for the encouraging words.
SG is home for us, and we moved overseas due to work opportunities.
DD is actually returning home for studies.

There will be slight change in her living circumstances as she will be alone. Initial days may be hard due to first time living away from family - although I feel she will learn to be more independent later on.

I agree with you, we will definitely have more opportunities to visit each other during holidays.

Decision to relocate family is not easy as we have to weigh long term prospects.
We have done it once before 😅 and may possibly need to do it again later on.

      Hi mother777

Understand from your post, you and your family are not living in sg. Your daughter is going to ntu hostel. Will she be coming back to sg alone?
      Hi tolerntoshare,

Yes, your understanding is correct. DD will return to SG alone and will be by herself in the hostel.
Work permitting 🤞, I plan to come in for a week to settle her down and buy her essential things. Then she will be on her own in NTU hostel 😓.

I have a younger son who is in the equivalent of Sec 2 studying overseas.
He will return to SG when he finishes his year 12, to join NS. He will have his sister for support during his NS days.

At present, our career and work commitments keep us away. It will surely be decision time for us in 4 years or so.

On one side, DD is pretty excited to be back in SG; while on the other bit nervous to leave family. This is why I was trying to find someone to share her hostel accommodation in twin room.

I keep hearing that the med cohort in NTU is very supportive, and I am praying they help her settle down. DD is smart and down to earth person, but being introvert - sometimes she comes out aloof, while in fact she is craving for meaningful friendships.

As parents, we do our utmost to equip our little birdie for flight away from nest.

      Thanks Lucid!

DD was excited to hear about the iPad given at NTU.

For parents with DD/DS going to LKCMed, did you have any further communications after the offer acceptance?
DD just received ONE email yesterday about mandatory health screening to be booked at Fullerton @NTU. Nothing else.

So was wondering if anyone else has updates for LKCMed.

For the candidates with double offers - hope you finished your selection of choice university between NTU/NUS. Good luck 🤞

      .
I think more pertinent to do own due diligence, kick the tyres , talk to students current and former. (Applies to LKC Vs YLL vs UK vs AU)
I did rem my own frens had a hard time in Dentistry and one was held back from graduating when a volunteer patient on a long case treatment ghosted and didn’t turn up. There was no Reddit or Ksp then so we didn’t know the details.

Own kids were never interested in dentistry so it made the scope narrower when looking at universities and courses.
We do recall one open house ( 2022 or 2023) where the dentistry talk was just before or after med so we caught it…
The faculty rep just stood woodenly on stage delivering slides on curriculum and the programme - nothing abt student life, no student rep to speak abt their experiences. No charisma, no heart etc. DS said ”no feel wor “ for both course and career.
Also, my friends in healthcare send their children to AU for dentistry - though I am not sure if they had applied to NUS too.

In life, I tell my kids to watch and observe what people do and then have the intuition and pray hard for wisdom.
Lucid, I do honestly pray the situation has improved.

With regards to your statement of friends sending their children to Uk / AUS, the teaching style in Australia is way different than SG. Teachers / professors are more open and receptive to feedback. They encourage children so much. But sometimes too much friendliness backfires - as they cheeky kids can take advantage and misbehave in class.

I have seen the colleges in Australia (Monash, Deakin etc. are like 15 mins from my home). And I visited UK med school as DD had to go for face-to-face interview, the college vibe is entirely different. Everyone from students walking in campus, the cafe, library, admin team is very supportive and full of support. The office admin lady in fact stopped what she was doing and took me on a quick tour of the campus facility when she heard I came all the way from Australia. It's so vibrant and there is so much acceptance on students from different backgrounds. No wonder many prospective students go to UK or AUS if the parents can afford.

But for this to occur in SG, it's not just the faculty - rather the whole society has to change. Us Singaporeans do get caught in our day-to-day life and try to be brisk & efficient in everything we do. Sometimes, this leads us to be just too direct and serious. Now when I return, I see lot less smiles when I walk on SG roads vs what I see in UK/AUS.

May be now when I visited SG and went for a quick walk on the road or just in the lift, people may have thought - \"Who is this mad woman and why is she smiling at me and saying Hello when I don't know her? LOL 😆

Well, I am biased, and I love my SG in all its shades.

It is indeed hard to use someone else's references to gauge. Hope parents and candidates are doing their own due diligence. Definitely go and see the university for own self and talk to existing cohort.

I honestly have not done any research into Dentistry into NUS. But to even imagine the possibility of students being left to fend for themselves to get patients to practice on or for assessment is appalling. Hope this situation has gone. :xedfingers:

Thanks for sharing the link. Interesting read... For some, the sharing at Redxxt... may cause more confusion than clarity..... Haha... Either way, it is win win for all.... Those with both offers if reject one, those on waitlist get offered
Was definitely an interesting read and insightful.
For double offer holders - please share which med school you finally chose to firm and accept 🙂

You may want to take this into consideration, talk to current and former dentistry students to verify what’s is really on the ground.

If really true, it will be very sad if our kids may have to suffer like that.
Perhaps, not having the WL converted may be a blessing to have dodged a bullet. So please do your own due diligence for the child’s interest.
Wow, I just read this lucid!
Its traumatic to even read and imagine what the young kids are going through for taking a course they wanted to pursue with passion.

Really saddened to hear it's not something new but has been happening for many years. Toxic culture {bullying, calling names, not supporting or ignoring people in need, ostracizing (excluding from group), purposefully failing because they stand out, demoralizing or demeaning behaviors - be it place of study or work} should be weeded out. No student should be left unsupported. My heart goes out to those who suffered or are at present going through this.

My DD wasn't interested in dentistry, but other students who aspire to take dentistry but are deterred because of unsupportive education environment - is absolutely unacceptable.

As parents, what can we do to bring this to limelight - so that the existing and future students do not have to face this again? Will bringing this to local media's attention work?

Wonder if anyone tried to reach out to MOE or the ministers to request an investigation and seek reform..

For NTU med candidates and parents - how many of you are looking to stay in the NTU accommodation (Crescent and Pioneer Hall)?

My DD will be looking to book NTU accommodation and hopefully she is paired with another incoming med student.
I heard that you could put preferred names for room buddy when doing applications for residence.

Let me know if anyone is interested in sharing Double Aircon Room with my DD.
Shoot me a PM, and we can discuss things privately.

      Cheers!

      Hi KSP Parents,

For all whose DD/DS will attend the WhyLKCMedicine Session this coming 11th May, please share some insights and learnings.

DD and I are unable to attend, much to our regret. And the LKC responded that they will not be having any recording of the session.

On the Novena campus, i recall it was mentioned at our campus tour, year 3 students will go for training etc. So do check on this but it could be year 1 and 2 will mainly be at jurong campus. Anyone can clarify here?

      Hello 00skyblue00 🙂

You are right. As per reading on the LKCMed Course Curriculum, Year 3 includes practice of core clinical medicine by working with clinical teams in healthcare institutions.

I have copied the actual statement from LKC website below.
I did read in blogs that bus/transport is arrange by Med School to bring students to and back from placement institutes.

I hope any parent with students in LKCMed or actual LKC students may have more inside info on this. Hope they share further to clear your concerns.

\"Core clinical medicine in practice: Immerse with clinical teams in healthcare institutions across Singapore to develop your core clinical skills in Medicine, Surgery, as well as in Short Postings undertaken in a number of specialities. You learn through supervised interactions with patients, teaching ward rounds, tutorials, and receive mentoring from Core Tutors.\"
