          Hi Parents,

I wished I had known about this conversation earlier πŸ™‚

I was one of the parents who spoke to the P when the note was issued earlier this year, informing parents that rankings will no longer be revealed to parents and students. The school's policy is quite strict. While I understand that it may be detrimental for a child's morale to have all these rankings written in one's report books, it is also the school's policy that teachers will not reveal rankings or even indicative rankings to parents who wish to know their child's position.

I am also wondering whether kids in C/F/G are equally distributed - I believe it is the case for the P4 2014s (first year the C/F/G was introduced). But I am not entirely sure about the P3 2014s.

My son's form teacher has been tight-lipped. There are however some 'indicators' one can use to ascertain the child's rough position range within a cohort, such as the Edusave awards, whether child is a prize winner, class assignments, Chinese class allocation etc.

                Hi Chanelprincess,

I have kids in both P1 and P2 2013. I do not know where my son stands as I did not ask his teacher. However I think the grades are very very close at the lower primary levels so I don't think we need to read too much to the relative positions πŸ™‚ I think there are many kids who scored say, 92%, many kids scoring 93% etc at each grade. I don't think a child who scored say 92% is necessarily weaker than a child who scored say 95%, based on the type of assessments that were conducted this year. So long as you think your child has a fairly good foundation, and isn't too careless, I think it's fine πŸ™‚

You saw the subject percentile tables right? That's another indication. If every subject beyond the 75th percentile, I guess, no cause to worry already lah hahahahahaha. I'm just taking it easy.

                  Hi doodbug

Yes he scored above 95% for all and even got 98% for Chinese
I was like  coz we didn't speak mandarin at home

Anyway I think it's a good motivation for him if he knows where he stands among his peers.

Congratulations! He should be a prize winner then πŸ™‚

errr we don't speak Chinese at home at all. I cannot recall my son's exact score but it was below 95% for English (argh! My husband and I speak good English at home, or so I thought.) but above 95% for Chinese (ha!). But we know better lah, that his Chinese competence is only blah. So take the results with a pinch of salt.

However, your kid is clearly among the top...so congrats! πŸ™‚

While I am certainly curious about ranking, I am neutral on the policy as I don't want my kids to be motivated via rankings, nor do I want them to develop the mental model of wanting to beat their friends. I quite like a congenial environment at their age. Heh.
