As a follow-up, I did a new English comprehension test with DS1. I had him read the passage in isolation, and then answer the questions to me, verbally. This time he answered all. I tried to get him to get him to answer questions 1 to 12 in 20 minutes. This time, I got him to refllect on difficult sentences and paragraphs, before reading the whole story; this reinforced his understanding.


Later today, I will upload some USA web-sites which provide great checklists for ensuring children understand how to tackle comprehension. I used some tips from here.

The English paper for 7 year old, entry to our Year 3 (Your P2) is from a top UK school. The link is below:

Hi Optimistforum, I was going to point out from your earlier post that comprehension may not be the issue at all. For example, I realize that my son's speech level is different from his writing level, perhaps because he has to concern himself with writing and crafting sentences, and spelling.

I'm not sure how these are taught (I'm quite happy for them to do it in school!), but if you need your son to acquire the skills sooner, perhaps you can help him in these aspects so he doesn't have to concern himself with the technicalities of writing the answers down. What comes to mind is for him to keep a journal so he can practice writing his thoughts down.

BTW, tks for the websites. I haven't even gone down to Popular to do my assessment book hunt yet, but certainly, these are interesting websites that I can call upon in a pinch when the time comes.

EDITED: I have just brought back DS1 from tutor, who has baselined him on Eng, Mats, VR and NVR. He is good at all; just has problems with comprehension - practise will make perfect. Am quietly confident now - and may put him forward for a prep school exam in 2 weeks if his daily practise shows cosnsistent and demonstrable improvement,

My dd in p1 this year can read quite well. Unfortunately, she has no interest in reading. For eg, she was given several Enid Blyton books for her birthday. But once she sees no pictures or that the book is terribly wordy, she just chucks it aside.

Any ideas how to encourage her to read more?

DH thinks it was probably below S$20 all-in, including shipping. The book itself probably cost about $10 and is in a very good condition. Quite a steal, as a new one from Borders was probably retailing at $59.

As the fonts are quite small, DD sometimes ended up skipping the next line when she reads :lol: :lol: And she can't pronounce \"Dorothy\" properly!

Must be like a tongue twister for her that Dorothy word! :rotflmao:

Hehee.. :lol: ... must be then.

Dorothy is not an easy name to pronounce especially for kiddies
who may not be very good with the rrr's and the thhh.. (tongue in
btwn teeth sound). Most kiddie books would have 2-syllable names
just like Do-ra... Man-ny... Han-nah... Wen-dy... or monosyllables
even better, like the monkey (Boots), Bob (The Builder), (etc).

But as long YOU can say it can liao. :evil: They keep listening to
you sayin' it, they'll eventually may get it spot-on.

Just asked her today how to pronounce the name and yeah, she has gotten it right!
