Ds said today's activities were ok , mainly learning cheers and he didn't seem to be too excited when talking about it. But he mentioned that the seniors who led their group were all very nice and caring. On a related note, he said he had fun but it was very tiring  . He's looking forward to tomorrow though! I was so happy to see him chanting the cheers to me cos he was smiling all the way. :rahrah:
Did your ds enjoy themselves?
Don't think he's tired as he appears energetic despite taking a total of 1.5 hrs to commute home via public transport. Hopefully, he'll enjoy himself more tomorrow. :scratchhead:

Thanks wonderm! This means can still go even if they didn't leave their names with the seniors today? Sorry, A bit kan cheong cos my ds seems clueless. :?The next round of orientation should be with their respective consortium, those are not CCA trials.
CCA trials are usually conducted in the afternoon (after orientation period, during first few weeks of term 1). It is important to ask your boys to check EMB (online system for the boys to check any notification meant for them) EVERY DAY. Some of the CCA trials info will be disseminated via EMB. Alternatively if your DS has left his name with those CCAs during orientation, the seniors may contact them via email or hand phone.
At the end of trial period, all Sec 1 boys will be asked to fill in their choice of CCA (6 choices). They will be allocated according to their preference as well as whether they are chosen by that CCA. Just like Sec 1 posting, if your DS is not happy with the posted CCA, he can appeal.
Good luck to your DS and remember to have fun! -

Yes. It really depends on which CCA and whether they publish their trials on EMB to everyone or only to those who have left their names. The practice varies because it depends on the seniors who are doing recruiting and organizing the trials. If your DS is interested in a particular CCA and he forgot to leave his names during orientation, he should ask around and find out the trial dates. As long as he turns up, he should be given a chance to trial.

During the briefing to parents (I can't recall the timeline, sometime during term 1, I think), we were told that that students don't need laptops. I haven't hrd DS mentioning about vendors selling laptops via the school too. However, some students have their own laptops for project work, for convenience, but it's not compulsory. -
Happy New Year, Wonderm!
Wishing you 365 days of happiness, health and joy :rahrah: -
Happy New Year, Lexis!
2014 marks a new beginning for our DSs. New people to meet, new lessons to enjoy and new memories to create. Here's wishing you and your family the happiest New Year ever! :celebrate: -
Congrats and Happy 2014 to the many new Sec 1 parents and DS. You have definitely made a wise choice.
Donโt worry abt CCA trials 1-3, basically familiarization sessions. There will be multiple weeks of trials hosted by all CCAs and yr DS only need to put in his choices after mid Feb. Entry to most Sports CCA can be competitive and many will be allocated to UG. Let yr DS pick with his heart but the school will have final say (appeal cases are entertained with valid reasons).
Impt daily habit is to check EMB diligently.
Laptops not required in Sec 1. Again EMB will inform if IT vendors have offers. School has well equipped computer labs and if you already have laptop/PC/tablet at home, donโt rush to buy.
If DS taking 3rd Lang, remind him to sign up for the shuttle service OW organized by HCI. $60 per year. Thu is HCIโs day in Newton center.
Donโt worry abt Animal Farm, worry more abt how DS will manage literary analysis. Go and watch "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" (showing at cinema now) as it will be well covered in literary analysis.
As for HCL, the school has multiple avenues to help yr DS cultivate interest and improve, eg. Twice weekly ZaoBao reading sessions
U might want to consider getting yr DS smart phone because lots of class and CCA comm via WhatsApp. Just set clear usage rules.
Also make time for the Sec 1 Parent Symposium and meet the Parents SG for yr DS consortium. -
Thanks for the reassuring note, hairy orange!
Happy new year to all HCI parents and their ds ! May we all have a smooth sailing and fulfilling year ahead. Looking forward to getting to know more of you.
