Pocket money

Oh dear...in our household, 2 generations of wives held onto the husbands' purse strings...considering that i have 2 boys....perhaps time for me to lax abit? :?mckenzy:
2. its a holistic kindof thing - we need to be consistent with how we handle money in the family as a whole.
depends on the reason for holding on the purse-strings no? if because of irresponsible/irrational spending behaviour, then an autocratic approach may be best, with incentives...
with the current genre of marketing strategies out there trying to steal every hard-earned dollar? i say more control... don't use a purse, use a safe...! -

my P1 gal likes to use the money and buy stationeries. We alraedy have so many pens, markers, rulers , erasers at home and she is still buying...I heard it is common esp P1 since its the 1st time they have the freedom to spend their own money.
after a few occasions, she started telling us the 'gifts' are from her friends, etc...its really hard to control them....
watch your wallet! -
I've been giving my daughter $2 since P1 (now she is in P2). Thought that is the norm but after reading the above it looks like I've given her more pocket money than the rest. :?

Me from your era...well deardear07, you must be very very young (or very very rich)!
During my primary school days, I had 50cts/day as allowance....a bowl of noodles was 20cts, drinks cost 10cts...still had money left over a a packet of snack (the multi colored rice cube snacks).
anyone here from my era??

That's why I am shock to see the sch canteen selling price..not much difference from the Hawker Centre:
- normal buns (red bean/lian rong) 60 cents
- Milo 70 cents
- Can drinks $1
- nasi lemak $1.2 - $1.5
Thinking since when sch canteen start to sell so expensive food. -
$1.50 daily
so if she spends $1.20 that day, 30 cents flow over to next day & we will top up to $1.50
Hubby said no incentive for her because she didn’t get to save that 30 cents. I feel that this is money management, $1.50 doesn’t mean she has to spend all. If she’s particularly hungry that day, there is excess money to buy more food. Otherwise keep for next day lor. Must know how to manage.
She doesn’t buy stickers or stationery though. She knows pocket money is strictly for food. No cold drinks or crackers either. Hot milo or hocklick is allowed -
Great discussion, has been in my thoughts for some time.
My daughter is going to P1 next year. Interestingly, she asked me the other day if she could bring her own "bento" (lunchbox) to school. (I suspect more for the novelty of the lunchbox rather than its contents).
While I am happy to do this, I am a bit perplexed as to how to do and sustain it. I’d rather not pack a meal in the fridge the night before - not so fresh and I doubt the sch canteen has a microwave for reheating!
So, does anyone have any ideas how to effectively prepare a lunch box for a kid like this? That can remain fresh until 10am-ish, and also cost effective?
And no, we don’t want to wake up at 5am to cook a fresh meal! Have barely enough sleep as it is. Thanks! -

and i was worried that my boy will be the only one in his class bringing a lunchbox. so now i am assured that he has company.
Came across this wonderful work by a http://allthingspurple.blogspot.com/search/label/Bento. I tried 'sculpturing' some funny octopus using sausages the other day and my practical son just told me that i don't have to do it again as he didn't want to waste my effort...cos food afterall is for eating only. Having sons vs daughters! -

I look at the bento-mummy blog. I become very stress. You are very lucky to have your boy, so very practical minded. -

when my husband saw the bento-blog, he was lamenting that those with daughters are so lucky! (ie parents have opportunity to do up such stuff for daughters) -
