Hi year 1 parents,


Just sharing with you that my dd uses a 11" macbook air all along since yr 1. She’s yr 3 this year. It’s a freebie I got from Singtel’s bundle promotion. So, the configuration is basic. I passed it to dd after 1 yr of usage. It is very reliable since day one, no problem at all. Just follow the school’s instruction to configure the system and all. Yes, get MS office online, no need drive. On top of the regular stuff they do in the lessons and projects, she also uses it to compose music and make videos.

The advantage is that the 11" macbook air is very light. She keeps it in her school bag. I’d made a fabric slip envelop for the laptop. She doesn’t have to charge it in school at all, just get it fully charged the night before.

I have a Mac Book Pro myself. I found that I’m very far from using the full capacity of it, even though I’m using the Adobe Suite, have thousands of high rest. photos and many many videos. And the battery runs out faster than the MBA’s.

Hope this sharing/review helps. Especially for those who don’t want to spend so much on laptop for school use.

I believe that there is a list somewhere on iNet of the various things you need to download and install. My daughter did it herself last year. Your daughter can ask the ICT staff for instructions how to find the list if you can't locate it.

Yes, there's step-by-step instructions with detailed screenshots. Dd got her instruction list from the ICT course I think. You may ask the ICT dept. for it. She did the setup herself, I think it shouldn't be difficult. Also, try to sign your girl up for the ICT course early:)

My daughter doesn't have a data plan. She doesn't really need it in school as they aren't supposed to use their mobile phones so constantly (although quite a few girls are very wedded to their phones), and we have wifi at home. She doesn't spend that much time outside. In any case, we have told her that it isn't necessary to check her whatsapp constantly - even at home, she only checks 2-3 times from the time she gets home till bedtime.

We don't have data plan too. My boy is in JC, he survives without it. They already have wifi connection in schools and at home. There's more than enough, as we don't want to be over/hyper connected. Sure we don't want them to be distracted by notifications while walking on the streets or crossing roads. Also, it is a good idea to set up some rules regarding the use of laptop and Whatsapp ASAP. The distraction could be a problem.
