Maybe still on holiday. Lessons resume when school reopens.

Hi, I plan to send my son to HUA cheng for lesson. Anyone can be my referral? Please pm me. Thanks.

OK this seems like a very silly question. Why would new students need a referral?
          Thanks!

I am deliberating between HC, TS, & Berries.

Distance is fair for all 3 schools.
My DS is K2 this year. What sch would you recommend?
            Thanks in advance!

Hi can I have some feedback on Hua Cheng at Bukit Timah Plaza?

My P3 and P2 girls just started this year for their Chinese Enrichment and Compo/Compre (P3 girl only) classes. So far the Chinese Enrichment is good and beneficial for them. The school’s standard is pretty high and I think it’s good training but my P3 girl is saying she does not learn anything for her Compo/compre class.

In the first place, her Chinese is not good and I think she is struggling with what the teacher is trying to tell/teach her. when she first came back, I saw that she had a full page of written Compo and I was like, "wow!". But then I realised she said she copied the whole thing from the board! Hmmm…strange. My gal is really bad in Compo and I know she will not be able to write even a simple compo. So, week after week, she has been just copying and I think she does not even know what she is copying!

I intend to speak to the teacher this week to understand more but I would like to know if any one of your kids who had attended the same class has improvements in Compo/compre? I think maybe the standard is too high for my kid there.

My child has never copied the compo from the board. I am surprised to hear this. Then again, we have been with the parkway and Thomson branch and bt operates differently.

My boy’s in P.4 this year. He has been in Hua Cheng since P.3. Initially he couldn’t even write a proper sentence but now I could see his great improvement. When newly start, he also copied teacher’s essay from the whiteboard for nearly a term. Reason being teacher rephrased students’ ideas from class discussion and wrote it on the board for the students to copy the proper sentences with good adjectives and paragraphing. Beside this, teacher goes through the model essay too. Slowly the teachers will encourage the students to write their own essay just with her guidance without copying. This method works very well for my son and his friends. I’m enjoying the joy with my son of his great improvement. This year my son even top his class compo writing in CA1!

jellywong, that’s good to hear that your son has improved so much!

I spoke to the teacher and she was very helpful. She says that she will try to pay more attention to my gal in that she may need to explain things more in detail to her. She did say that my gal is very weak and so find it difficult to catch up.

May I know if your son does his weekly revision on what was being taught in class? I think the weekly ‘mo die’ is supposed to help kids in comp writing right? My gal usually do not revise her work and only at the very last minute learn and do her homework. She is not a very motivated child. She does not a very good attitude towards her studies. I think ATTITUDE plus HARDWORK should pay off somehow. Sadly, these qualities cannot be taught…

I will still keep her in the centre and hopefully she can improve somehow, even though a little. Fingers crossed.

Hi jeanieg, thanks for your sharing!

I think there is a myth that many of our parents may fall in which kids could change their attitude automatically as long as they join in a good school/program. However, it is not neccessarily turned into reality as expected. I ever struggled with my elder boy when he was in his lower primary until one day I was enlighted by a teacher that it is actually a triple game needs the efforts from our kids, school and ourselves. As kids are kids after all with less control and persistence, we should not merely relay on their own. Our involvements are even more critical to their success when they are young. I fully supported that the school requires parents to help remind and help for "Ting Xie" at home regularly. Can image what progress can achieve as they only back to see the tutor once a week for just two hours. Its just my two cents’ view.
